KORPIKLAANI

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Jonne! Thanks so much for accepting this interview because I know that you are very busy at the moment! For those who do not know Korpiklaani could tell us a little how it all started?

Jonne: I started with folk/metal things already at the year 1993 but first Korpiklaani album came out 2003. So it was pretty long base work before these six Korpiklaani album. At the first it was fully acoustic and I played my first few years actually only in ski resort for the tourists, Levi Lapland. Then late 90’s came the first Shaman album Idja and few tears after that Shamaniac 2001. Korpiklaani is actually same band as Shaman. We just changed the name because it came another same named band from Brazil. Anyway, here we are now with the sixth Korpiklaani album Karkelo, which is just released.

Hanna Tsepesh: The lyrics are written in the Kalevala style (a special metre from the Finnish national epic), right? So what is your inspiration to create the lyrics for Korpiklaani? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Jonne: Most of the lyrics are written our own guest writer Juha Jyrkäs. He is very into Kalevala and Finnish myths overall. He actually writes the poems and then we write the music around it. Sometimes it goes also upside down. I have a song ready without the lyrics and then I try to arrange Juha’s text to the finished song. Sometimes I have my own idea about the text, like for example Vodka for the new album but most of the lyrics comes from Juha Jyrkäs. I don’t feel myself so good lyricist. Composing is more easy to me.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

Jonne: I still have my own faves from 80’s like Motörhead, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and bands like that. I think James Hetfield is one of the biggest influence to me as a singer. Then there is vocalist from folk and worldmusic side like Mari Boine, Wimme Saari and many others during the years. However, it is very important to me keep my own sound and style. I don’t want to sound like someone of my heroes or artists what I like.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had or have any singing lessons or any other preparation? I like a lot your voice and I think you are very versatile singer.

Jonne: I learnt a lot from Sámi people when I lived up north in Lapland. There I learnt just living with those origin people. That’s why you can hear chant singing style, kind of a yoik from Korpiklaani albums time by time. Never got any real singing lessons.

Hanna Tsepesh: When you start to play guitar? Also you play mandolin, right? It was difficult instrument when you start to learn?

Jonne: I started to play acoustic guitar when I was 10 years old 1984. Then I got the first electric guitar two years later 1986. I bought mandolin only because I wanted too few things to the Korpiklaani albums with it. I can’t say, that I play it very well but I wrote some licks with it just learnt to play those well. Time by time, it is nice to pick the mandolin from the wall holder at home and play some fun stuff just for fun.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band has a new album called “Karkelo”. Once again the band can surprise us with an excellent album! I don’t have anything band to say about this new album. When we listen the music’s we just want to dance, sing the music’s very loud! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “Karkelo” and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Jonne: Now on the new album there is many fast, happy sounding drinking songs as everyone can guess from the name Karkelo, which means in English “Party”. Other hand there is the deeper side of us very well shown as well. Then there is most heavy song we ever written, Huppiaan aarre. This song is almost doom. I’m glad, that we have still something new to offer after so many albums. The sounds are now different than other Korpiklaani albums because now we used the real producer, Aksu Hanttu, who took care about the sounds but also he had his words to the arrangements. Before, we more or less done these kind of things ourselves and I was actually the only who had the whole idea of the album in the head when we went to the studio. It was freshing to let this work and burden for somebody else at the first time.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Everything went well at recording studio?

Jonne: We are very proud of it and actually we couldn’t make decision, which song would have to be the bonus track. We had to keep our own little lottery of it. Other hand it wasn’t so easy to everyone of us trust to “outsider” and I got some bad strict feedback for example from Hittavainen (fiddle, other folk instruments) because at the first he didn’t realize why we should suddenly use the producer. Anyway, we are all very proud of the results in the end. On the studio was some tiny technical problems but the atmosphere was very good and I think it also sounds through the album, that we had very fun time to record it.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Jonne: We’ve got very good response about the Karkelo on the gigs, so seems like fans love it and it is the most important thing to us of course. Reviews on the media aren’t been so good every time and they are blaming us to do the same thing again and again but it makes us wonder, that does they ever even listened the album really…

Hanna Tsepesh: The band also has a new video out now called “Vodka”. You guys have fun with the shootings? I liked a lot the video!

Jonne: All of us hate every kind of shootings. Video, promo picture or what ever shootings. We are not at all in our own “landscape” in that kind of situations. When they are shooting during the gig it doesn’t matter of us because on the stage we are always in our own element. We are making the music and shootings are other peoples way of art but of course we know, that it is a part of all this and that’s why we just has to do it.

Hanna Tsepesh: When you guys started the band, it was very difficult journey right? But, you guys keep your hard work and never give up when you see difficulties in your way! I read something about your journey and I would like that you tell to us little bit about it…

Jonne: Yeah, it’s been long and rocky road but I think everything is been needed preparing for what we are now. It’s been wrong dudes in the band, no gigs to play, tours where conditions are not even human, bad managers, who stole the money and let even their liabilities for us to pay. But because of all these things we have perfect line- up, we are lot more wise and strong. Now we are keeping our own rules and we know which kind of people we want to work. It is not so easy all the time nowadays neither but at least everything goes lot more easily now.

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Jonne: This is a very hard question…if I really have to pick something up right now and this mood, I would say Mettänpeiton valtiaalle because it is so versatile or Huppiaan aarre because it is so heavy and emotional in same package…or Vodka because it is so lively…or…
Hanna Tsepesh: You guys have a future concert in here at “Festival Ilha do Minho”. You guys have a lot of fans in here! We are very happy about this concert! So, what the fans can expect from Korpiklaani?

Jonne: At the first I must say, that we are so glad that we can come to Portugal again. Last time when we were in Portugal, I called to home and here in Finland was hell of a snow strorm. I took a picture of Cane and me under a orange tree and sun was shining and sent it to home by hand phone. They went mad of the envy to me...Anyway, people can expect fresh and lively folk metal show, which will be fun as well. Something new and something old songs, in good balance. It will be fun, I can guarantee it.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Jonne: We hope to see all of your happy faces there in Portugal. Listen the albums and sing along out loud again on the gig like last time. See you soon! Greetings and all the best for you!

DECAYED

Hanna Tsepesh: Olá (Hello in Portuguese) W! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! Decayed is a very known band in Portugal but for those who do not know the band could tell us a little how it all started and also tell to us the line up? You guys started in 1990, right?

W: Yes in August 1990 most precisely. The band has been through several line-ups, the starting line up was JA (voice/Guitar) and Nuno (Guitar), after they decided to change the name of Decay to Decayed.
Then Carlos (Bass) and Pedro (Drums) joined the band. Many people came in and out the band, and today the line-up consists in JA(Guitar/Vocals), K (Bass), W (Voice) and VA (Drums).

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics?

W: Since our first releases in 1990 until today, we never changed the concept of the lyrics, that’s something that we face it like an identity of ours … we talk about our hate for Christianity, also our hate for some people themselves, Paganism, and stuff like that.
JA writes most of the lyrics, I wrote 2 of them for our “The Black Metal Flame” album, also our former vocalist Pedra wrote our “Spikes, Leather and Bullets” lyric. We usually get some help from friends, and they know they are welcome to write something if they want.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

W: Well, since I was a kid I was always into the Heavy Metal scene, so my favourite bands are, of course, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, WASP, Saxon, Running Wild, Loudness, KISS, Dio, Lizzy Borden … I have some vocalists that I really admire like the “Metal God” Rob Halford, Blackie Lawless that really gives me all the inspiration to do all the obscene live acts also (laughs).
The rest of the guys in Decayed are also into Heavy Metal, also some old-school Black Metal, some Punk, our drummer listens to a lot of Grindcore too. We have too much bands in our heads to mention.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had any singing technique lessons for growlng? Also I want to send my congratulations for you and for the entire band for the great success and hard working that is always surprising the fans!

W: I never had any kind of lessons or something to do what I do. Since I was a kid, I listen to Metal bands at home, and you know how it is … you try to do it at home when no one is around (laughs)!
The same way people sing their favorite songs when they are in the shower, I do the same … but with most heavy stuff, this kind of gives you all the lessons you need, if you start do it since kid.

Hanna Tsepesh: One little curiosity: Now you are a father, you want to transmit something about the metal? If, yes can you tell to us what you want to transmit to your daughter?

W: To tell you the truth, I really don’t want to “shove” Metal into my daughters head, she can hear whatever she wants. I’m sure it will happen to her the same that happened to me when I was a kid, because of my older brother. He never told me to listen to Metal, but I never heard anything else at my parent’s house, so I started to learn for myself what path I wanted to go. I choose Metal, I’m sure my daughter will do the same without anyone tell her to do so!

Hanna Tsepesh: Great answer! The band have a new album called "The Black Metal Flame". I have to say that I liked a lot the music’s and for me you guys have a brilliant album in here! I liked a lot the “Blood of the Altar “and “Endless”, I think this music’s reveals a lot what Decayed are! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about "The Black Metal Flame" and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

W: There are lots of differences between “The Black Metal Flame” and “Hexagram”. To start we never wanted to do a kind of “Hexagram II”… after the big “boom” that the Hexagram album was in the Portuguese Metal scene, lots of people thougt that we could make an identical album after it, just because we found the “magic touch”, but we never wanted to be that obvious. One step each time, we made something we wanted to do in “Hexagram”, now it’s time to move forward and try something new.
This last album is more into a vein of our 1rst and 2nd albums, more into the old-school Black Metal scene, we left the “Black n’ Roll” tunes resting for now (laughs).

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs). I am big fan of Ramones work and I stay very surprised when I listen to your cover! I liked so much! Congratulations guys, very cool and energetic cover! So why the band decided to recorded Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones cover)?

W: Just like you, we are all Ramones fans. We was in our bass player home once, and we were listening to Ramones and smoking some joints, that’s when we all had this idea. We like challenges like these ones, and we thought it would be quite funny.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Everything went well at recording studio? It was an easy process for the entire band?

W: It’s always an easy process for us to be in studio, since we’re not there for more then 15 days, it really bothers all of us to be stuck in one place listening to the same tunes over and over …
Just like the “Hexagram” studio session, we filled our cars with beers, and spent all the studio session drinking and having fun, that’s what Decayed’s all about!
I enjoyed the final result, just like the most of the guys. Of course we always think that we could change “something here” and “something there”, but I think it happens with all bands.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

W: We laugh a lot with most of the reviews we read, but feel proud with it. Some reviews bring us down in the mud, and some others put’s us next to the Gods, it’s hard for us to find a “normal” review, and we really enjoy that things are like that.
Usually, people into Metal for some good years, write nice stuff about us, because they know what they are writing about (even if it is a bad review). But I know when a young kid writes about us, because we have bad reviews just because we don’t look the “northern way” and we don’t record our albums in the cold forests or mountains or we don’t burn churches (ours are made of stone, so it wouldn’t be easy, anyway).
Last week JA found a review, where the guy says that a Black Metal band shouldn’t have pictures in the booklet laughing and having fun … how more stupid can this be?

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album safely, what they can do?

W: You can always e-mail our guitar player JA first to:
Chroan@netcabo.pt
All e-mails will be answered, of course.

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

W: I think I enjoy “Hordes of the Antichrist”. Since the music talks about a kind of “Evil army” who marches through the valleys to fight the christians armies, and erase them from this earth, we tried to make an instrumental stuff that could really gives us that scenario in our heads, and I think we made it. Also I like “Onslaught the Holy Flock”, evil as fuck!

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour?

W: We always are thinking about an European tour, but do labels think about it also? We were supposed to make an European tour after the “Hexagram” album with Usurper, bur Folter records couldn’t make it possible. Well … let’s wait and see.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is your personal opinion about the metal in our country (Portugal) in now days? Did your think is got better or poor and what is your best advice for the metal bands that are starting a band like Decayed style?

W: To tell you the truth, I’m not very much into the Portuguese Metal scene now, first I don’t have time, and second, I see more and more bands coming out, but all of them sound the same, its crap.
If people want to start a band like Decayed, why don’t they listen to … Decayed? (laughs)! After you understand the concept of Decayed, start to think with your own head, and make things with passion … and always high!

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

W: Keep the Metal flame burning high, don´t care about trends, they will come and go, and Metal will always stay here.
Support the scene!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success with "The Black Metal Flame"! See you guys very soon on stage…

W: I wish you luck Hanna, with this project. See you soon! We are now finishing our 8th album, to be released in the beginning of 2010, stay in touch, all of you!
Metal to the bone!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you so much for your words! We will wait for the future news for sure...

REQUIEM LAUS

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Miguel, how are you? Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL and thanks for having accepted the invitation for this interview!

Miguel: Everything is fine in here, thanks. I appreciate the opportunity that THE GATES OF METAL give us to talk about Requiem Laus!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you! You are very welcome! The band began in 1992 right? Can you tell us a little bit how the band started and also introduce us the current lineup?

Miguel: Yes it is true; we are a band with some years. I started with my first band in 1989 (Morbidatory) in 1992 I co-found Requiem, later in 1994 it became Requiem Laus. During these years, we had some members who were important in the sound of the band I quote: Marcelo Freitas (drums) Bruno Sousa (guitar) Tony Figueira (bass). We edited some demos, but we stopped for a few years for personal reasons. Currently RL are: Ricardo Fernandes (bass) Daniel Pereira (guitars) and Gabriele Freitas (drums) and I Miguel Freitas (guitars and voice), I have to say that the band is the same since 1997, except for Gabriele. Ricardo was absent only between the years 2001 to 2003.

Hanna Tsepesh: The lyrics from your album were written by Jorge Ribeiro de Castro, who I must say that has a very interesting work, worthy to read and enjoy! Can you tell us a little about the lyrics and if in a next album the lyrics will be written by one of the band members?

Miguel: Jorge is our friend and big fan of the band, for some years he had always dreamed to be a writer and his work is finally paying off, I am very happy for him. He writes the lyrics since the demo in 1996. We like a lot Jorge’s work as a writer, so we take that great talent he has to write the lyrics for us. The lyrics are a mirror of our world, of good and evil, hate, love, personal issues, social and environmental, all that surrounds us and can be interpreted in several ways from those who read. In the next album, seems to be back Jorge Castro’s lyrics.

Hanna Tsepesh: Miguel could you tell us your favorite bands and also tell what are your big inspirations to create the riffs for RL?

Miguel: I started listening to Metal since the age of 12, now have 36. I hear several metal bands like: Death, Obituary, Boltthrower, etc. I would not say my inspiration because each song has a bit of our soul. There are days with more inspiration than others, and we will not get it anywhere, it just comes.

Hanna Tsepesh: How did the name Requiem Laus came from? Before, the band had name of Morbidatory. What was the reason and why the band changes the name?

Miguel: Morbidatory was my first band, and experience in the metal world which lasted 2 and half years. All the band members left the band, and I wanted to move forward with something more serious, from that appeared Requiem in 1994, and then Requiem Laus. The name came about through the great work of the classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his great masterpiece "Requiem" which I love. The reason to add Laus was because there was a band with the same name. I took and was a way to honor the composer Mozart. Requiem Laus is a Latin name and meaning “Praised Rest”. I take this opportunity to leave you here a link of Morbidatory live in 1991:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x6Mxxd9r94
www.youtube.com/watch?v=rACsveMzESM

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you Miguel I think the readers will love it! In 2007 the band released the debut album "The Eternal Plague", I have to tell you Miguel that I was very amazed and surprised by your great talent and great work on your voice, my congratulations to you and the entire band for the great work! The riffs are powerful and I love each subject from the "Am I Not Mercyful?" With a brutal entry to the last music "Peccata Mundi" with a very calm sound and interesting ending, which I will not reveal to create a little curiosity to our readers! But for those who have not had the opportunity to hear this album, you can open a little bit the "veil" and talking about "The Eternal Plague"?

Miguel: It's a melodic death metal album, and has a Digipack format with 12 musics. Among them we have: “Am I Not Mercyful "; “Perception"; "Black Decay" with power and very Feeling. “Silently ... Death Leads” is the calmest music in the album. In our opinion is the best work of RL so far. I take the opportunity to cheer the excellent work of our bassist Ricardo, he is responsible for the album artwork and the website.

Hanna Tsepesh: I visited your page to see the rest of the work and certainly he deserves the congratulations for the artwork! How was the studio recording?

Miguel: It went well without any problems. We had everything ready.

Hanna Tsepesh: you guys played the Metal GDL in Grandola, how was this day for Requiem Laus? The public received you well?

Miguel: Yes, we were very well received, the organization and the public were excellent, we liked it a lot, it’s a festival that you have to stop to see. We played the new stuff and who was in there liked for sure.

Hanna Tsepesh: Requiem Laus had the pleasure of playing in the same stage with bands like: Akercocke, Keep of Kalessin and with Corpus Christii. If you had to choose one of those bands that you liked the most to share the stage, what would it be? You get to know some members of these bands?

Miguel: It's always a pleasure sharing the stage with other bands, we have no preferences. We spoke with staff of Akercocke, Lay Down Rotten, Hatesphere, The Firstborn, Seven Stitches, WEB among others, very cool people.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is a dream concert for all elements of Requiem Laus?

Miguel: For us it would be with "Death" which unfortunately is not possible. But there are many bands such as: Obituary, Slayer, Hypocrisy, Iron Maiden, Nevermore, Morbid Angel.
Hanna Tsepesh: In a word how you define RL?

Miguel: Eternal

Hanna Tsepesh: A Curiosity: it is easy for a metal band have support in Madeira? Can you tell us a little about this, because many people thought that there were no Metal bands in Madeira?

Miguel: Actually people do not realize the effort that we and other bands do for keeping a band alive, here on the island. We have no support; unfortunately the bands are for themselves. A very difficult fight, on our own, but here we are. Like "Alberto" says we do not want “pés descalços cá” ("bare feet here").

Hanna Tsepesh: You want to say something to your fans out there?

Miguel: Just want to thank all who had support and believed in us throughout these years. This album is for them...

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you so much for your answers! THE GATES OF METAL wishes to you and the entire band a big success for this album "The Eternal Plague"! May your journey into the world of metal be as eternal as your album…

Miguel: thank you so much! Much success to THE GATES OF METAL, continue with your excellent work.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you so much for your words! All the best…

ANOMALLY

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks for the interest in this interview and welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! How it all started with ANOMALLY and tell to us the lineup.

Miguel: Anomally began in 2005, over nine months the band was almost set, except the bass which came only in 2007. I am Miguel and I play keyboards, Nelson is the vocalist, Tiago is the guitar player, Lote is in guitar and vocals, Luis is the bass player and Zé on the drums.

Hanna Tsepesh: what are your favorite bands?

Miguel: Dimmu Borgir, Cradle Of Filth, Opeth, Moonspell, Carcass among others, but these are basically my favorite.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is the inspiration to create the lyrics for ANOMALLY? There is something mystical in them, right? From what I’ve heard some songs have sinister melodies ...

Miguel: The lyrics are based largely on fantasy stories, issues such as vampirism, spiritualism and lycanthropy are strongly present in our lyrics. It is something that fascinates us, all these mysteries that will eventually be reflected in how you say, mystical and sinister melodies.

Hanna Tsepesh: When did you start playing keyboard? There is some reason for your choice? Any musician inspired you to start? Now in terms of musicians who play the same instrument, is there any in particular that you admire for his work? If yes why?

Miguel: If my memory doesn’t fail me I started playing keyboard perhaps 13 years ago. Reason I think there was no reason at all, it was an instrument which by chance was at home, maybe if I got a guitar for Christmas that year I was playing guitar today [laughs]. I undoubtedly admire the work done by Mustis, he is an excellent musician who can create an environment almost alike a horror movie, I can also mention Benjamin Ryan and Les Smith (two original Cradle Of Filth keyboard players), which were amongst my first major influences.

Hanna Tsepesh: I assume that when the band started to write the first album "Once In Hell”, you've inspired by the lyrics to compose your part, right? Can you tell us a little about your creative process? I take the opportunity to give you my sincere congratulations on your work in terms of melody, I liked it very much!

Miguel: Thanks for the compliment. My creative process depends on my mood, I try to always create an environment that is capable of leading the listener to imagine our songs like in a terror movie. About the lyrics, they only inspire me on some arrangements that I do in certain musics like “Legacy of Blood” or “Apocalyptic Signs”.

Hanna Tsepesh: Very cool! Speaking on your first album "Once In Hell", I give my congratulations to the entire band for your great work on both level melodic, riffs and voices as well the lyrics are fantastic! The songs transmit me something mystical like I was transported to a completely different world with lost souls in their sadness, despair and pain! I liked a lot the music called: "The Words from the Death", it has a beautiful melody when it comes back to "Like a summer breeze, a distant dream in an image of the death”! You knew very well how to use the melody in your music and do not transform them into a boring album for the listeners! You were a pleasant surprise for me! For our national and international readers can you tell to us about the album?

Miguel: You told almost everything [laughs], but I can say that those who hear this album will make a journey to the past, what was good was done in the 90's. We tried to mix the aggression and melody characteristic of melodic Death Metal with the Gothic mysticism, for now everything went good and it has given good reviews so far.

Hanna Tsepesh: When you came into the studio you had any pre-thoughts about this album? You guys had some problems at the recording studio or something?

Miguel: When we go at the studio all the issues had already been worked, we only were there to record. There were only some small-level arrangements of guitars and keyboards in the studio but nothing that had changed the original idea of each theme. Problems during the recording process always happen, unfortunately our case was no exception, we had to stop for almost a month and a half due to health problems by the producer who had to leave for Lisbon, suffering from a cold during recording and when is the singer is serious [laughs], another small "problem" was with the song "In the Words from the Dead" which seemed to be haunted [laughs] when we started to listen to the recording quite simply we only heard sounds that nobody could figure out where they came from, it was the only title that was always a problem when trying to open it, while we listen to it, sometimes it was in the middle and more or less at the end, honestly we started to think there was something weird going on [laughs].

Hanna Tsepesh: That is a really strange and curious thing! Besides the songs I liked the graphic and artistic level of the band too, the album cover reflects your style and what “Once In Hell" is! Can you tell us the idea of who was and who did all the work for you?

Miguel: All of the artwork of our CD and the graphical design of our websites were in charge of our guitarist Tiago; the idea was presented by him and as you say, was well connected with the main subject of this album. We wanted that the listeners look at the cover and imagine what they will be listening to and I think that came out good.

Hanna Tsepesh: A personal curiosity: the representation of a woman with wings of an angel (in the cover album) with blood what represents? The band wanted to say something with the cover?

Miguel: This was one of our concerns, trying to send a message through the cover of our album. The representation of an angel with one of the wings ripped apart ends up having at least two possible meanings. Both can be imagined that the wing was tore apart by someone against the will of the angel, or even if it means a revolt, a rebellion against something that could be eventually the church represented in the form of an angel. I personally prefer the second message [laught].

Hanna Tsepesh: You also have available a video of the song "In the Words From The Dead." It is also a video available on your MYSPACE and the respective MAKING OFF! How came the opportunity to film? How was the filming?
Miguel: The video was one of our bets since we started the process of recording this album. It would be another way of projecting the band, one advantage for us. The opportunity finally came when Débora Castro in conversation with us created the whole idea for this video. The recording went well, the making of our video is available on YouTube at www.youtube.com/anomallytube you may have an idea of the environment that resulted from all the work that has now get this to be the first of many I hope.

Hanna Tsepesh: Let's talk a little about concerts, you have played with bands such as: MNEMIC (Hiper Tensão festival), DAGOBA and FEAR MY THOUGHTS. How was that experience for ANOMALLY?

Miguel: I think that three years ago when this band started someone said to me that we will be playing with bands like Mnemic, Fear My Thoughts and Dagoba, I would laugh a little and say for sure: “are you crazy?” [laughs]. Fortunately, things here in the Azores had a few improvements and were some of the few happy covered with the opportunity to share the same stage with these bands. It was without doubt three of the best moments in our very short musical career at the concerts. The reaction of the public was very positive because they never had seen Anomally in live act and is always a desire to return there.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band has been distinguished as the best rock / metal band act in the “Azores music awards”. How was your reaction?

Miguel: It was a pleasant surprise particularly because we are a young band.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band have some dates/places scheduled that you can tell to us?

Miguel: For now we have nothing scheduled. In the Azores is quite complicated to have a very full agenda, or the lack of space to play or the fact that the public get a little tired of seeing the same bands playing which ultimately influence who they would like to spend more time on stage.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is the next step for ANOMALLY in the future?

Miguel: We are currently spreading our work, trying to capture the attention of anyone that not yet know us. For the future I think the next step will be getting a label; to give concerts and continue to work on what will be the next album.

Hanna Tsepesh: Being a band of Azores, has been difficult this journey? The band can get some supports?

Miguel: Speaking of the eternal wails of the Azores bands is already a cliché. The truth is that it remains complicated to get support, places to play as I mentioned earlier and publishers here (they don’t exist in here). Living in an island has damaged a little our path. For example, we didn’t record at Ultrasound Studio due to the fact that each crossing cost almost 300€ for each of us, we are six that would make a total of €1,800 only in tickets. It is very complicated and when I talk about it I remember that I read the editorial in the Loud! magazine on the scene report of Azores where the editor was not aware of the bands going through hell for not playing, and after preparing the report Azores we find an unfair scene because there are bands with great value but they are located in an island having to spend years and years to battle without achieving their objectives and he didn’t understand why the continent bands are always complaining about they don’t have places to play. Our "weapon" for this was very simple; we don’t want to have the Azores thinking that you can’t do anything because you live in an island! I think this is quite indicative of the situation that we live here, however we have tried doing it all to break this barrier and we hope that this album is the starting point.

Hanna Tsepesh: Last question, do you want to send a message for people that will read this interview but also the fans that have supported you?

Miguel: I would like to thank those who have supported us and for anyone that will read this interview and want to hear a little of what is in "Once in Hell ..." just visit our official website at www.anomally.com and www.myspace.com/theanomally

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you Miguel for your answers! THE GATES OF METAL wish you and the entire band a big success with your first album "Once In Hell…" as well as for future concerts! See you guys very soon somewhere...

Miguel: I hope to see you in our concert in mainland...

SPELLCRAFT

Hanna Tsepesh: Hola(Hello in spanish) Midgard! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know Spellcraft could tell us a little how it all started?

Midgard: SPELLCRAFT band was born in 1997 until now without stable singer until 2001 when Midgard accept the proposal of the band until nowadays. First in fallen 1997 the band recorded “Funeral in the night”. In 2002-2003 SPELLCRAFT recorder his first L.P named “Souldevourer” but we preferred recorded a good LP . In 2007 we went to recorder to BCN studios in Barcelona to preparer “” Stirpe Obscura” our first serious L.P and we signed a contract for 2 L .P with grotesque records label (Sevilla - Spain ).
We play raw black metal with melodic riffs similar Swedish black death and we are a stable bands since our beginnings .

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics for the band?

Midgard: Darkness, evil , hate, death and war…

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

Midgard: Well, SPELLCRAFT is the result of a lot of musical tendences about the black and death music. We like Necrophobic, Dissecction, Morbid Angel,Abigor,Throme of Ahaz,(Old) Emperor, ect until trash and heavy metal. Always metal although we are open minds and respect all the music styles.

Hanna Tsepesh: One little curiosity: What fascinates you most in black metal and what is your opinion about black metal in our days?

Midgard: Black metal is a different manner of life in reference to awhat people understand as a normal life. For this reason I think that black metal people is different to others and fascinates me the aura, the ambient essence of our raw but melodic music . Normal people don´t understand our music and details of it.
I think that in the nowadays Black metal as the other things has evolutionated. I don´t know if it´s better or worst but all in the life is in a continua evolution. I liked the black metal 90´s but now there are good bands that they are borning with a good forms.

Hanna Tsepesh: Spellcraft have a new album called “Stirpe Obscura”. I want to say my congratulations for your work in this album and say to you that I really liked a lot this album, I am really surprised! My favorite music’s are: “beyond the lost forest” and “stirpe obscura”. For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “Stirpe Obscura” and what you want to conquer?

Midgard: You can imagine that we like “Stirpe Obscura” a lot ; sorry but “Stirpe obscura” was recorded during six weeks in BCN Rooms Studies and mastered by Tailor Maid in Sweden (Marduk, Dark funeral…). We dedicated a lot of time and we care all kind of details. We want to congratulate to Pera and Gorka Prieto , the recorder studios thecnics , for all the support and good work. We are very satisfy with “Stirpe Obscura” and our label too due to we have sold more than 1500 original copies .
Our meanly aim with “Stirpe Obscura” is do a good black metal and we want tha people can enjoy with it . We want to superate this L.P with our next L.P

Hanna Tsepesh: Everything went well at recording studio? It was an easy process?

Midgard: Oh! It was a good experience during six months between 2007 and 2008 due to first we recorded 4 songs (promo ) and when we had signed a contract for 2 LP with Grotesque music we finished “Stirpe Obscura”. For us it was an exciting process, first the clacket, the drum, rythm guitar, lead guitar, bass , voices, acoustic and Spanish guitars and a good atmosphere in the band , the same since 1997 when we beginning.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Midgard: That´s incredible. Our label and managers are very satisfy and people in Europe and south America have response with good critics. For us the best words of our fans are when they told us that “it´s an original music, a mixture of raw black metal with Swedish and melodic black death” although we like the critics for learning too.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album safely, what they can do?

Midgard: In different specially black death metal shops or in our label on line shop:
www.grotesquemusic.com or info@grotesquemusic.com

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Midgard: The Song named like the album “Stirpe Obscura”. You can see 10 minutes of a different sensations (raw black metal and melodic riffs, different voices and even acoustics and spanish guitars). This track have liked a lot in our country and for us it´s the best song that we never have composed because it´s very complete in all the aspects of it.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Midgard: Yes of course. Now we have a Spanish tour with Spanish bands for 4 days ( Madrid , Salamca,Vigo y Oviedo ) and perhaps we have to go to play to france . For us Portugal play in Portugal it´s very important due to it´s a brother country!

Hanna Tsepesh: In your country ( Spain ) you have some kind of support in there? How are the things about black metal in Spain ?

Midgard: Well now we are seeing that it´s borning a new generation of black metal maniacs. It´s a good new for all the Spanish bands and there are good and brother bands. For example I can tell you that we played in Madrid one month ago and people from differents areas of the coast of spain (2 or 3 hours in a trip) came to see us and they enjoy in the concert a lot. For us it´s the best.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Midgard: We invite all the people to support the world black metal bands and to visit our myspace. We are playing during 12 years and we believe in the true and wild black metal .
We invite us to lisenting “Stirpe Obscura” and we hope to see you in our concerts. Thanks to you for your support to SPELLCRAFT.
We are the black blood,
We are the “Stirpe Obscura”

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with “Stirpe Obscura”! We hope to see Spellcraft very soon in here…

Midgard: If you believe in something don´t wait people do it, Never will do what people do. True Black metal!

FANTASY OPUS

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Pedro and Marcos! Firstly I want to thank to you guys for having accepted the invitation for this interview! I would like to tell us a little about Fantasy Opus and make an introduction about yourselves and the other members! From what I read the band went through difficult times to find a singer... For you Pedro, can you tell to us how happen the invitation to sing at Fantasy opus?

Pedro: Hello Hanna, first of all thanks for the interview and the interest shown by my work and the work of Fantasy Opus.

Marcos: Hi There!

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome!

Pedro: About Fantasy Opus I am not best the person to speak only because I'm in the band since2007. The invitation came through a mutual friend who told me about Fantasy Opus and their need to find a vocalist to be able to complete the album. When I spoke with Marcos and Nilson they gave me a CD with the songs of the album. I must say that I was impressed with what I heard, and then we arranged an audition and was considered fit to sing in the band (laughs).
I Immediately felt a great empathy with the entire band, it seemed that we knew each other for a long time, they are all very nice people, from the rigorous guitarist Marcos Carvalho,to the "Friend" and the bassist Nilson Santagueda, the Hyper fun drummer Paulo Santos (Pajo) and finally the super organized and guitarist Cláudio Santos (Shiver).

Marcos: The two founding fathers of the band are me and Paulo Santos, the drummer. After that, Nilson Santagueda joined in 2001, and Pedro Arroja and Claudio Shiver Joined in 2007. The various members that have passed by Fantasy Opus only contributed to slow down the progress of the band, creating more problems than benefits to the group, so they are all irrelevant at this point to us. From the early stages of this band, we’ve had a lot of problems finding a lead vocals. The truth is that there are not a lot of good classic metal vocalists in Portugal. We’ve tried a few, but none has ever fitted the band like Pedro. Not only his vocal skills, but also his posture regarding music in general, and his qualities as a person, just fitted the band like a glove. It was an immediate click. With Claudio it was exactly the same thing, and allowed the band to pursue a more guitar-oriented cacophony-like aesthetic, which I personally love.In a sense, although people only recently have got to know us, we have been here a long time, since 99, basically, so 8 years to finally get a good solid line up, what in Germany or Sweden would have take 1 month or less.

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome! What are the inspirations to create the lyrics for Fantasy Opus? What is the predominant theme in your songs?

Pedro: The basic inspiration is the world of medieval fantasy with a very strong component. Basically the album tells the story of a warrior and the various steps to achieve freedom to his people. We have a ballad 'Higher State of Mind' is an introspective reflection about the warrior and adds a level of lyrical diversity that is not very common in the Power Metal bands.

Marcos: I wrote almost 100% of the lyrics, and it sort of evolved from a traditional “dragon’s and warrior’s” kind of lyrics, to a more nuanced, almost progressive rock kind of lyrics, here and there. However, the predominant theme is medieval.

Hanna Tsepesh: Let's talk a little about your musical journey for our readers know a little about you guys! First let’s talk about Pedro: I make a little search about you (laughs) and I was surprised with your journey! Currently you are on this band (FANTASY OPUS) and DRAKKAR, but you already sung in bands such as: DARK FATE, and MELODIC PATROL and CRYSTAL DRAGON. And also, you made two special parts on: SACRED SIN and FALLINGDUSK. I cannot say that you are a beginner in this! You could tell to us a little about your journey and if it helped you in your training as a musician and finally, if you could tell us how are things in DRAKKAR, you are still in active, right?

Pedro: Right(laughs), I am singer since I started Dark Fate with colleagues from school when I was there about 17 years old, Melodic Patrol and Drakkar a year later, with my brother and friends from childhood, which remains today (Drakkar band), to Fantasy Opus in 2007. I did some very good parts in projects such as Crystal Dragon with guitarist Pedro Miguel where I had my first serious experience in the studio and with the recent album of “Falling Dusk” with André Prista, and now I am completely involved in the next album of this band.
Of course I learned a lot from all these gentlemen and the diversity of styles that I had to do in each of the projects, I send a big thank to all those friends who had the opportunity to work and wish a lot of success for their projects.
Yes, Drakkar are still active. Things are going well despite the frequent changes in the line-up during our long existence; we now have a stable group of people consisting of friends working peacefully.

Hanna Tsepesh: When you start to sing? Any singer inspired you? You had or have any singing lessons? I ask this because you have a great power voice that reminded me of great vocalists like the FREEDOM CALL singer, I do not know if you know this band...

Pedro: Since a kid I always liked singing while I was listening music. Me and friends sometimes roamed in the streets like crazy singing Iron Maiden and Helloween music’s and screaming like Manowar. Also playing acoustic guitar where I sung a few improvised songs. Then came the opportunity to be part of a band in Almada called Dark Fate and since then it never stopped.
My references are: Bruce Dickinson, Michael Kiske, the Eric Adams, Geof Tate and the great Ronnie James Dio. These were also my teachers since it was through imitation that I learned almost everything because I never had singing lessons.
Unfortunately I don’t know Freedom Call but I will try to correct this.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? Do you have any musical reference in our country (Portugal)?

Pedro: My favorite bands are: Iron Maiden, Manowar, Helloween (with Michael Kiske), Queensryche, Dio, Bathory, Rammstein and Nightwish.
My reference in Portugal are of course Tarantula not only for having a style similar to us but mainly because in my opinion they are the best, they are excellent musicians and Jorge Marques, who already had the opportunity to talk at the end of one of their concerts it is for me the best Metal Portuguese singer.
I also like a lot Sergio and the old The Coven and Gang and current RCA, which also is one of the best of our country and definitely the best on stage.
Finally I cannot leave out the Moonspell who do a great job leading Portugal in other levels.

Hanna Tsepesh: Now for Marcos: When did you start to play guitar and if you had any guitar player that inspired you to start?

Marcos: Hmmmm, I started to play guitar in 93’. Most guitar players tend to have a period in the beginning of their guitar practice where they only play for fun. Not me. At the time I was starting to get deep into knowing heavy metal bands, so my reference at the time was Megadeth and Marty Friedman’s solos… so I was aiming for that level of guitar playing from day one. Then, I knew Satriani’s “Surfing with the Alien”, and then a torrent of solo guitar players, namingly Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Vai, Jason Becker and others. Later I found out Allan Holdsworth, John Petrucci, Michael Romeo and Ron Jarzombek, also big influences, but curiously, the first “serious” solo I have ever learned to play was Metallica’s “Fade to Black” first solo.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands?

Marcos: Wow… my Favorite bands… difficult question (laughs), since they’re so many… Megadeth, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Enchant, Foo Fighters, Extreme, Pain of Salvation, Gamma Ray, Diana Krall, Raul Midon, and a million other bands and artists, from the Hilliard Ensemble to Killswitch Engage, Children of Bodom or Into Eternity. I also listen to a lot of classical music, specially Vivaldi, Paganinni, Rachmaninov, and more contemporary stuff like Bella Bartok. Also, all those albums I fervously studied for years and years of Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Allan Holdsworth… I must confess that I miss that generation of guitar players…. My musical references in Portugal come from a lot of different backgrounds, once again reflecting the various styles I listen. From guitarrists like Joel Xavier, Gonçalo Pereira, and Pedro Jóia, to Madredeus, Dulce Pontes, etc, but I think the Heavy Metal reference in Portugal are definitely Tarantula. Great friends of ours, and great musicians.Hanna Tsepesh: Someone told me (laughs) that now you have endorsements? Can you tell to us about it?

Marcos: (Laughs); Yeah, well, I have an endorsement from Inferno Guitars, which is a small Australian company that builds custom guitars. The guitar is being worked upon as we speak, and is estimated to be in my possession somewhere in September. It will be a signature model, called “The Grand Opus”, which means “The great Work”, and has a lot of cool features, like 27 frets, ultra-exotic woods, and so on. Trevor, who’s the owner of Inferno guitars traded dozens of mails with me and was very patient until I had exactly all the features I wanted. An endorsement regarding amps is also being negotiated, but I can’t give any details…

Hanna Tsepesh: You also have other project in your hands. Tell to us about your first new solo album? I am very interested about that…

Marcos: This one is definitely a labor of Love, and it’s even more personal than Fantasy Opus songs to me. It will be my first solo album, a dream I had since I started playing guitar in 93. It’s all written guitar wise, It will have 10 tracks, and it will be a conceptual album. It will depict the life of a nameless character from his birth until he or she is about 25 years old, sort of a soundtrack to various episodes (the most meaningful) of his/her life. I have sorted out the bass player, who’s an unknown but very good “Hot club” young musician. The drummer is still being sorted out, I’m still searching... I can, however, lift a little bit of the veil on the album, giving you the track list:

1- Sleep Baby Sleep
2- Across The Skies
3- Late Afternoon at Ericeira
4- Lisbon Nights
5- Cocaine
6- Discovering Love
7- The Princess
8- Temporary Insanity
9- Loss
10- The Thinker

I took about 18 months in my spare time to write the whole album, but I think it’s definitely a strong instrumental album. Recordings are set to Start in September, and I do not underestimate the challenge it will be to record the song’s I’ve written. Think Spastic Ink meets Cacophony (laughs). I also have a Pre-deal with Gluetone Records, which is a small indie Label that have put out the latest Paulo Barros’ solo album, and is also connected to some fusion, jazz artists. So Stay Tuned! (laughs)

Hanna Tsepesh :(laughs) We will! Let’s talk about your new album "Beyond Eternity". To me the band created a very complete album, because we have fast songs and melodic ballads very well prepared! For those who have not heard the album, can you talk about your debut album?

Pedro: I remember that when I entered the project the album was already recorded so my opinion is genuine and not taken by emotion. It is a very conceptual album and very well structured and has strong moments, quiet and more or less dramatic and all very well fitted to a very consistent music’. It is a very guitar-based of a high technical level with influences of classical music, a rhythm section with energy and intensity with metal and progressive moments, and the voice of a typical classic Heavy Metal with a little more intensity than the normal Power Metal bands.
For me is a good combination between the rich instrumental of Power Metal and intensity of the voice of the Heavy Metal.

Marcos: That was the premise all along, to create a diverse album. I tend to get bored with some power metal bands that do a complete album with songs at the same speed and register. I wanted us to make something more diverse, which had a little bit of intimacy and feeling amongst all those rumbling double bass drum sections. For that, I must confess That Iuri Conceição, our former Keyboard player, had a relevant role, since he’s a prog rock fan like me, so we wanted to capture that feeling and intimacy that prog rock bands and classic metal bands are so proficient at.

Hanna Tsepesh: Your album was produced and materialized by Luis Barros! How was the experience to work with Luis Barros in "Beyond Eternity"? Pedro, you recorded your voice in ETIC studio. Everything went well at recording studios? The band feels proud with the final result? Did you think that Fantasy Opus have their own style?

Pedro: Well about Luis Barros I had the opportunity to know him and talk to him several times but not while the recording of the album, but the opinion of the rest of the band I believe to be excellent working with him. The end result I think is very good; I hope that people enjoy the album. About the style we can say that somehow we have our own register, because as I said before, do a kind of fusion between Power Metal and 80s Classic Metal which gives us a sound a little out of the ordinary.
The voice recording was made in the ETIC studios - Technical School of Image and Communication (where I work as a Graphic Designer) with my colleague Tiago Marques (sound technician) and was a super quiet process.

Marcos: Working with Luís Barros was great, and contributed in a decisive way to the final product that is the album. We had little experience in the studio, and I tend to be sometimes too ambitious regarding technical execution, so I personally needed the “wise man”, AKA producer to help stop my madness. (laughs) Also, in the middle of the recording sessions, we would talk about the music business, and that was also a learning experience for us. I personally take great memories from those days spent in Valadares and not only Luís, but the Barros brothers will be forever linked with the history of Fantasy Opus. We are definitely proud of the album, but we want to do better next time, or else there will be no reason to put out a second album. We have more studio knowledge now, and a more solid group, and better work methods, so I think the future will be bright. Regarding having our own style, I don’t think any band can say that nowadays, since there are thousands and thousands of musical registers, and chances are that what you are doing has being done in a similar way for some band in some period of time.

Hanna Tsepesh: What Fantasy Opus expects to achieve with this new album? How are the things doing with album reviews?

Pedro: First of all we want people to enjoy our work and then we want to see what happens, all of us work in a very professional way to do our best with the main objective to be heard and appreciated by as many people as possible at national level and international level.

Marcos: We want to reach as high as we can. I see this is album as the start of a journey. We know the music world is very competitive these days, but I think we have currently a strong group of musicians capable of reaching some notoriety internationally. Of course we know that takes a lot of time and persistence, and that’s the path we want to follow. Regarding reviews, I don’t tend to follow a lot those things, but here and there, someone I know sends me a link of a review. The lowest note I’ve seen was a 7/10 and the highest a 8,5/10, so that’s good for a first album, in my opinion.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite songs on this album and why?

Pedro: “Warrior’s Call” is a great song with several chapters, but that seems to listen to short because of the degree of involvement that music creates with the listeners. It is a song that has time to be born, develop and complete a very balanced way, with moments where the guitar of Marcos causes feelings of true apotheosis. (laughs)

Marcos: Pedro has said it. My favorite song of the album is the Warrior’s Call Saga as well, for its diversity in construction, the different moods and feelings that the different sections convey type of harmony, etc. Maybe one day we will surprise everyone and start a gig with that saga…

Hanna Tsepesh: Pedro, you are also a designer like you told us! It was you that make the cover for Fantasy Opus (if am not mistaken). Speaking on the cover of the album, I give you my congratulations for your work! When we look at the cover we capture what is easily the "Beyond Eternity" album, you agree on this? Can you explain us a little about the process of creating the cover?

Pedro: Yeah, when Fantasy Opus got a new singer, they also got in a package a designer and illustrator (laughs) and since that day I do all image of the band, from the logo and the cover of the album, posters, etc ...
The creation of the cover was a process based on a briefing that was given me by the band. I want to depict the environment of an epic battle, fantasy, and good against evil with a central character as the icon that we will always use in future artwork, it’s is a kind of our "Eddie".
Both the logo and image and colors are primarily intended to take us back to the world of Metal bands of the 80s and try to bring our album that incredible mystique that existed at the time.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is your personal opinion about the metal music in our country? Unfortunately we do not see many bands like Fantasy Opus around here ... you guys think is cultural issue? Did you guys think is hard for some people accept certain styles of metal in our country, especially your? I at least have some difficulty finding Portuguese bands like Fantasy Opus in here. It seems that are hidden (laughs)…

Pedro: The national metal is growing very quickly and with great quality, the Portuguese finally start to believe that we have the same ability as others. For a long time we saw the bands foreign as semi-gods when in fact they are people like us with the same problems and difficulties, also pay bills, eat, also go to the bathroom (laughs) the only difference is that they do not think in a defeatist way like a lots of Portuguese think in several areas.
As for style I think the Power Metal in Portugal is still not very popular for cultural reasons, that we have a little idea that the metal has to be heavy, that metalheads are some bad guys who scare the old ladies and the guys of Power Metal is a kind of Barbies (laughs). It reminds me that "the football is not for girls." But I think that is ridiculous idea is already part of the past and that the style will grow naturally in Portugal.

Marcos: Well, a few years ago, there weren’t a lot of bands. Now I could name at least a half dozen now, all good bands in my opinion. The thing is that they do not have any visibility at all in the media, in the press, etc, so I’d say that the greatest problem here is lack of National identity. For instance, in Spain, they tend to hold sacred what is Spanish in general. That’s partially the reason why there are so many metal bands there, because they are not seen as inferior comparing with foreign bands. That’s the mentality that is lacking. I can bet that anyone that goes to a gig of a good Portuguese Metal band, will get a great metal evening. So it’s kind of a Catch-22. If people do not think in Portuguese bands as being inferior (because they are really not), more people will go to the gigs, and the promoters will be able to pay better to the bands. The bands will have more resources to invest in better productions and better stage props, and provide better albums and concerts. And the circle is perpetuated. That tendency to see Portuguese bands as inferior to foreign bands, is slowly dissipating, but the change is still too slow in my opinion. Having said that, I think the Portuguese metal is progressing in a good way, with a lot of talented bands in various subgenres, all contributing to a stronger metal scene here.

Hanna Tsepesh: You guys want to send any message for our readers and your fans that always support you?
Marcos: If you don’t know us, check us out, and go to our gigs, I promise you that you will have a great time! For the people who already know us and that we have seen a lot of times in our gigs, thank you is not enough, you guys have been awesome, and we will do our best to return all that support, with bigger, better gigs, and great albums in the future.

Pedro: Well, I hope you enjoy our work and go to our concerts and make our concerts your party. Keep supporting Fantasy Opus and all national bands because only with your support that we have the opportunity to prove that the Portuguese are just as capable as any other. Long Life for Portuguese Metal!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank so much Marcos and Pedro for your answers and time! THE GATES OF METAL wish big success for your new album and for your personal projects! See you guys in live concert...

Pedro: OK, thank you!

Marcos: Thanks for all the support you have demonstrated so far Hanna! I hope you can see us playing live as soon as possible… maybe drop by Lisbon some day.

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very Welcome Fantasy Opus! For sure some day I will see you guys in live show! All the best…

SCARLET SINS

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Scarlet Sins! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know SCARLET SINS, could you tell us a little how it all started and make a little introduction about yourselves?

Syl: Hi, I'm Sylvya, the vocalist and lyricist for the band. Cris and I founded the band 4 and a half years ago.

Cris: Hey, I’m Cris, I play guitar and write music for the band.

Tanya: Hey, I’m Tanya, the bassist and I’ve been in the band for 3 years now.

El: Olá (Hello in Portuguese), I’m the newbie. I joined 2 years ago and I play drums.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics for the band?

Syl: I draw from life experiences or the things that surround me. It's easier to write when I’m in a dark place. It’s therapeutic.

Hanna Tsepesh: Let’s talk a little bit about you girls: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer/ guitar/bassist and drummer that you admire the most?

Syl: There's so many. I grew listening to hard rock / metal bands like Metallica, Deftones, Alice in Chains, Motley Crue…As for singers I love Janis Joplin, Steven Tyler, Jeff Buckley, Sebastian Bach.

Cris: My favourite band is Metallica, but I also love Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Alice in Chains and Black Sabbath. My favourite guitarists are Zakk Wylde and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Tanya: There’s so many bass players I admire. But I’d say my top 3 are probably Justin Chancellor (Tool), Cliff Burton (Metallica), and John Campbell (Lamb of God).

El: This question is always hard to answer because I love so many ones for different reasons but Chris Adler/Lamb Of God is a most, Daniel Adair, Tomas Haake/Meshuggah, Dennis Chambers and so many others.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had or have any singing lessons or any other preparation? You have a great voice! I am really surprised with your talent…

Syl: Thank you. I started vocal lessons at the age of 13 and studied with three different teachers throughout the years.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band has a new album called “Scarlet Sins”. I have to say girls I am really surprised I love this album! Scarlet Sins are living proof that girls can make great music and also can rock a lot and sometimes better than many men’s out there! My favorite music’s are: “Drown” and “Reborn”, I think these songs can transmit a lot of feelings! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about the album and what the band wants to accomplish?

Syl: We're very proud of our first CD. It's all thanks to our producer Richard Chycki who made it possible. He really captured the Scarlet Sins sound and brought out the best in all of us. We just want to keep writing and releasing our music to the world.

Cris: The album carries a lot of pain and grief from the things we were going through at the time it was written so you’ll hear a lot of aggressive and melancholy moments. I’m really proud of it and hope the next one will be just as good or better.

Tanya: We put our blood, sweat and tears into that album and this is why it’s so rewarding for us when people tell us how much they love our music!

El: The plan is to win 4 Grammies with the next album. Haha! All we want to do is have fun and it turns out that people like it and that’s wicked. We work hard for it, but at the end of the day it’s for the love of music.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Everything went well at recording studio? It was an easy process?

Syl: We are extremely proud of our first CD. It was definitely a learning experience being in the studio. We had an amazing time working with Rich and we are looking forward to working with him again in the future.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Syl: The response has been great. Everyone has been very supportive and positive.

Cris: The positive feedback has definitely been humbling…

Tanya: People keep asking us when the next album is coming out because they were so excited about the first one.

El: Man, after the first few reviews we got back, it confirmed we’re on the right track!

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album safely, what they can do?

Syl: It's available directly through us on our website: www.scarletsinsonline.com

El: You can also find us on iTunes or order it at your local music store through cdbaby.com’s distributor, Super D!

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Syl: I love them all because everyone is personal to me, but if I have to choose one, I'd say "Drown".

Cris: My favourite songs are Reborn and Are You Worth It because they’re the most fun to play live for me.

Tanya: My two favourite songs on the album are Fire Inside and No Arguments. Fire Inside is really fun to play live because it’s one of my most challenging songs on bass. No Arguments is such a dark, moody ballad…I love it.

El: My favourite songs to play live would be Broken because we changed it a bit for the live show and there is some cool interaction with the crowd and With You because I love to see all those metal heads soften.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plans to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Syl: Most definitely. We are looking forward to playing the world stages.

Cristina: If our Portuguese fans want us to play there, they need to spread the word about us and we will play there!

El: Hell Yeah. You guys have amazing wines over there!

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs) Yes we have! Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?
Tanya: We wanna thank all our fans reading this right now! You are the reason we do this.

El: You guys RAWK!

Cris: Spread the word! Tell all your friends about us!
