U.D.O

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Stefan! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! First of all: how are you guys and how are the things doing with your concerts?

Stefan Kaufmann: Hi Hanna! We’re fine. We are just busy playing the summer festivals in Europe. Up to now, everything went great and the reaction of the fans was fantastic everywhere.

Hanna Tsepesh: For those who do not know U.D.O could tell us a little how it all started?

Stefan Kaufmann: U.D.O. first started after Udo had to leave Accept in 1987. Then he recorded the albums “Animal House” (1987), “Mean Machine” (1989), “Faceless World” (1990) and “Timebomb” (1991). After Accept split in 1989, I was producer for the albums “Faceless World” and “Timebomb”. Accept then reunited. After the second split of Accept in 1996, Udo called and asked me, if I would like to reunite U.D.O. again with him. And I said YES! So we recorded the Album “Solid” (1997) and carried on recording albums and doing tours until today.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is the inspiration to create the lyrics? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs to comply with the lyrics?

Stefan Kaufmann: With a good British friend of ours, Mr. Frank Knight, we always do one or two brainstormings at the beginning of a production. We then create most of the hooklines, lyrics, phrases and so on. So, in most of the cases, the lyrics are there before the music is composed.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favourite bands? You have any guitar player that you admire the most?

Stefan Kaufmann: I love the old bands like Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Sweet. The only modern band that I really like is Rammstein. The guitar players that I admire most are Ritchie Blackmore because of his feeling and Eddie Van Halen because of his technique.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know when you start to playing guitar? What is the guitar brand you use and why?

Stefan Kaufmann: Actually I started playing guitar before I started playing the drums. My mother played in a mandolin orchestra so she taught me the first chords on the guitar when I was about eight years old. At the age of ten I got my first electric guitar and amplifier. Today I mainly play a Gibson Explorer because it suites my style best. For ballads or songs that need a more tender sound I use a Fender Stratocaster.

Hanna Tsepesh: how is to work with Udo Dirkschneider?

Stefan Kaufmann: It’s fun working with him. We’re now together for more than thirty years, so each of us knows what the other one wants without saying a word. That makes working together very easy and very efficient.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band has a new album called “Dominator”. Fantastic album Stefan! You guys make an excellent work like always! I send my congratulations for the entire band! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “Dominator” and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Stefan Kaufmann: Thank you very much! The newest album is always the best. “Dominator” to me has a greater variety of songs and a much more modern sound compared to previous albums. We tried to connect the classical heavy metal music with up to date arrangements – and I think it came out great!

Hanna Tsepesh: Everything went well at recording studio?

Stefan Kaufmann: It was a long process – but that’s what it takes to produce a good album! We started recording the album in August ’08 and kept constantly working on it until June ’09 – except for a little break in November ’08 when we did our Russian/Ukrainian tour. We recorded more than twenty songs and had to choose twelve of them to be released (that was maybe the hardest part of the work …).

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Stefan Kaufmann: As the album just came out, I don’t know the reaction of the fans yet – but I hope it will be good. The reaction of the media is overwhelming up to now. Everybody seems to love the album and also the critics are great. So far we are very satisfied with the result.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album, what they can do?

Stefan Kaufmann: I don’t know exactly what you mean – but if you mean to buy an official album and not an illegal copy of it, I suggest buying it at www.amazon.de

Hanna Tsepesh: Yes is that! what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Stefan Kaufmann: So shortly after finishing a new album, I love every song of it. They’re all my little babies and up to now I cannot really say, which ones I love most. But once we’re on tour, the favorites will establish and then you can ask me again …

Hanna Tsepesh: the band have already a tour, right? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Stefan Kaufmann: The European tour will start in October ’09 and will carry on until January ’10. Of course we plan to play every European country including Portugal.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Stefan Kaufmann: We hope that our fans like our new album and that we will see a lot of them on our upcoming tour. For any up to date news check our homepage www.udo-online.de

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success with “Dominator”! We hope to see U.D.O very soon in here…

Stefan Kaufmann: In the name of the whole band I would like to thank our fans worldwide for their support all over the years! Without them we wouldn’t be there where we are today. And I wanna thank you, Hanna, for your attention and a very interesting interview.

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome! Thank you very much and all the best for you and U.D.O.

METALIUM

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Lars! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! First of all: how are you and for those who do not know Metalium could tell us a little how it all started?

Lars Ratz: I got the idea middle 1998 to created an extraordinary Metal band and called some friends. We have met to wrote songs and in 1999 we created the very first cd “Millennium Metal –chapter one”.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Lars Ratz: First is always the music and then the melody lines. Afterwards we write the words.
Mostly related to the reality but wrapped in metaphors often.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands?

Lars Ratz: We have as inspiration more the old bands like , Rainbow, Black Sabbath, old Maiden, Deep Purple and combine them with our own ideas.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if Henning had or have any singing lessons?

Lars Ratz: Henning had classical training for vocals.

Hanna Tsepesh: Metalium will have a new album called “GROUNDED - Chapter VIII”. For people who don’t listen yet can you tell to us what we can expect about this new album and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Lars Ratz: There is no big difference in the previous albums. We are METAL and never will be something else! Even if it’s a similar style every album has its own touch.

Hanna Tsepesh: Everything went well at recording studio? The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something?

Lars Ratz: Well…. as I’m the producer I can state that I would not have finished the way it is unless it would have been as I wanted it!

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Lars Ratz: We would love to come again to Portugal but at this moment we only have Germany scheduled. In case there would be any professional promoter in Portugal we definitely we would come to play.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one young guy (that is starting a band like Metalium) asks you one big advice, what will be your answer for him?

Lars Ratz: Believe in YOURSELF and ROCK !

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success with “GROUNDED - Chapter VIII”! We hope to see Metalium very soon in here…

Lars Ratz: Bom Dias Portugal, we hope to see you on tour soon.

SUNDOWN SINDROME

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Sundown Sindrome! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! First of all: how are you guys and for those who do not know Sundown Sindrome could tell us a little how it all started?

J. von Crow: HEY you! Well at least I am alive. Been sick now about one week but I will handle it. Sundown Sindrome´s story can be read from our myspace so I guess it is too long answer right now? I met Das Scheit guys first time while we were on tour together with To/Die/For and Das Scheit! Actually we´ve done two european tours together. That´s how I became a friend with S.de la Corneille and U. del Cuervo.

A. van Crane: I was called by U., he asked me if I wanna join a new band. I said yes.

S. de la Corneille: Thanx I am fine, just suffering of that heat here in Germany...but we Germans are always complaining about weather...winter is too wet, summer too hot. I think Mr. von Crow enjoys summertime in his vale.

U. del Cuervo: It’s our pleasure! Well, we all are very busy actually by writing songs and preparing this and that in the back. There’s a lot to do.

M. di Corvo: S.de la Corneille contacted me about his plans about Sundown Sindrome asked me if I’m interessted. After I checked out the first demos, it was clear. I wanted to join Sundown Sindrome.

Hanna Tsepesh: Sundown Sindrome is a Dark Rock band, right? I would like that you guys explain to our readers to know more about S.S music style.

S. de la Corneille: You are right! Well, to tell it in simple words: Sundown Sindrome stands for dark and melancholic melodies but also heavyness. It's simply dark touched Rock music! This was the main goal for me personally to start with the guys.

M. di Corvo: As you said, it is Dark Rock. It has a deep melancholy flair, flavoured with an epic and synthesized touch. Combined with a powerful voice, drums, guitar and bass, it sums up in the material you heard.

A. van Crane: Well, I don' know actually. We're working on songs and it seems it's getting to a direction no one ever expected. It's gonna be very exciting.

J. von Crow: I could say we are Dark Rock band, yes. Usually I hate to put all music under some genres but....anyway, We are the kings of Vale of Crows and our music is for the people of Vale of Crows.

U. del Cuervo: Our style is first of all ROCK! Powerful, atmospheric, straight. All about the rest, let the people decide.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics for Sundown Sindrome? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

J. von Crow: Personally I always do melodies first. Well…sometimes there can be some nice line where to start the whole idea but mainly melodies comes always first. For me music is not music without melodies! Even my lyrics may sound as a fantasy thing; there is always something from reality. It is just disguised behind different kind of words and lines.

S. de la Corneille: J. writes all the lyrics...so I think with his words everything is said about it. Writing songs is different, it depends who has the basic idea. If I write a song for example, the melodies and instruments are first and J. completes it with lyrics. I think J. always has some words in his mind with melodies when he starts a song.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any musician that you guys admire the most?

M. di Corvo: I don't have specific favorite bands, it is more the song I like. But if I have to mention a few names it would be Rammstein, Vanden Plas, Christina Aguilera, Killswith Engage, Evanescence and so on. Funny mixture, isn't it?

A. van Crane: This list would get too long because there are so many personalities out there to mention, e.g. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Miles Davis, Shostakovitsch, Charlie Prker, Allan Holdsworth, Homer Simpson...

S. de la Corneille: Too much to mention them all. I adore a lot of music and bands. For me personally I love the last album of 30 seconds to Mars...it rocks and it’s real art. Of course there are some old heros, but I never was really influenced by them.I’m more influenced by movie soundtracks, melancholic stuff (surprise)... One composer who touch’s me deep with his melodies is Clint Mansell - if someone knows him (laughs).

U. del Cuervo: They are to many great bands and even more great musicians but personally I don’t have “heroes”. My favourites are bands doin hand made music. From GlamRockers MÖTLEY CRÜE to Rock bands like EXTREME or TOTO. But I also like great songwriters and performers like MICHAEL JACKSON or Mr. Entertainment himself FRANK SINATRA. The list is endless.

J. von Crow: I am not in Metal at all. I love The Doors and Jim Morrison. Muse, Placebo, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran etc. If I should name some metal bands that I CAN listen without being bored I should say In Flames (Clayman album especially) Sepultura´s Arise album, Sentenced! and well...that´s it. Usually it depends what kinda day I am living.Sometimes I can listen one song from Slayer and it is totally enough for me. But if the song is good then it doesn´t matter what kinda music it is.

Hanna Tsepesh: J. von Crow, I would like to know if you had or have any singing lessons or any other preparation?

J. von Crow: Me? Singing lessons? No way! Can´t you hear it? I am not a real singer. I just want to describe my feelings and spit it all out as I want.

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs) ok! When you guys start to play your instruments? There is any reason to choose your instruments?

U. del Cuervo: Well, I started to play the piano when I was 10 years old. But I drummed everything from first day of my life. The way was prescribed. At the age of 16 I started to play drums finally. Much too late!

A. van Crane: I soon recognized that girls like guys playing guitar. So that's why I started. Well, not sure if that's the truth. Personally, I always liked electric guitars since I was a kid. Don’t know exactly when it started, but someday I found a guitar at my parents house and I started to play on it (there were 3 strings on it but who cares), and that was it.

S. de la Corneille: Can’t remember...maybe I was drunk (laughs), but I guess I was late....14 years old or something. I m used to play bass now for some years, because in my first band a bassplayer was needed. But when I write songs, I play bass at last. I’m writing with keys and guitars... just a liiiiittle bit.

M. di Corvo: I started at the age of five. The reason is quiet simple; my mother is a classical piano teacher.

Hanna Tsepesh: I already listen to your music’s at MySpace and I have to say that I am really surprised and I can’t wait to listen what you guys will make in one album! Can you guys tell to us what we can expect from Sundown Sindrome album? Can you reveal something about your future album?

J. von Crow: Now we need just a few songs more and we could release an album. We are unsigned also so things do not happen that fast I think. I am really waiting days when I could tour with these Crows together around the world.

U. del Cuervo: You will get another 6 maybe 7 Rockin trips through the Vale of Crows to continue the started work. We all hope to hit the road very soon!

S. de la Corneille: I guess an album with 10-12 darkrock-bastards which will stick in your head.

M. di Corvo: How to describe music by words? For sure a hard job. But with every idea for a song we have, I will try push it into something unique. Every song needs to be treated in the right way, give the song what it needs. This is important for the whole aspect of songwriting. But for sure all upcoming songs will have the original Sundown Sindrome trademarks.

A. van Crane: I don't know, let's see what happens.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been about the music’s at MySpace by the media and fans?

S. de la Corneille: Well the media was very interested but there was no official release until now…the response of fans on MySpace is fucking great...

U. del Cuervo: First of all, we’d like to thank all these crowy girls and guys out there for being part of and taking part on Sundown Sindrome. It’s amazing. The response makes us proud but we all know to work even harder now to do a really grant debut.

Hanna Tsepesh: About the music’s at MySpace, what is your favorite and why? I liked a lot “Raving Hearts”, because I can feel a lot the band background and your knowledge from the other bands. M. di Corvo makes a excellent work in the melody in this music, don’t you agree?

J. von Crow: I wrote this song for To/Die/For more than a year ago, but we took it with Sundown Sindrome. My favourite is Vale of Crows! It rocks and there is some kinda feeling that I really love.

A. van Crane: I like all the songs. They're all different and unique in their own way. But there's a lot more to come.

U. del Cuervo: Each guy brings in his heart. One important thing is the different musical influence of each member. That’s why Sundown Sindrome always will be bit different and will never sound just Gothic, just Heavy or just whatever.

M. di Corvo: Well, I do agree, thanks for your positive words. It is my favorite song as well!

S. de la Corneille: Who is M. di Corvo? (Laughs) I think every member of the band did a fucking great job! I have no favorite one because I remember every single moment in studio...and when I hear the songs I have some pictures in my head I don’t want to miss. It feels good to be part of the Sindrome.

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs) well I was talking about the melody in that particular music, but of course all the band makes an excellent work! You guys are from different countries (Germany and Finland). It is difficult for the band record music and also this debut album? How you guys deal with it?

J. von Crow: Take a plane from Helsinki to Frankfurt. That´s how I deal with it.

A. van Crane: Lots of travelling by plane. I'm glad there's Internet.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour in the future? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour? J. von Crow, did you remember your concert with To/Die/For in here? Long time ago… ? , maybe we can see again To/Die/For with Sundown Sindrome in here, in the same tour …

S. de la Corneille: Well for a singer it will be painful to sing in two bands each evening...I don’t know if this would be a good plan BUT of course I want to play wherever people want to see us. And of course we want to tour in Europe and all over this planet when we finished the first album. But we will wait for the right promoters.

J. von Crow: I remember Portugal shows, yes. It was very nice to play there. Well…of course it was a bit weird to play with Exodus but anyway.

Hanna Tsepesh: Let see what will happened! The band want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

U. del Cuervo: Thanks to all of you for joining and pushing us! And thank you, Hanna, for well prepared questions and spending your time!

A. van Crane: Watch out and don't trust you expectations. We're gonna kick them off.

M. di Corvo: Check out the whole album as soon as it available. It could turn into an important spot in your life.

S. de la Corneille: Let the music speak!

J. von Crow: SUPPORT US! Be yourself and love yourself.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks so much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success with Sundown Sindrome! We hope to see you guys very soon in here…

S. de la Corneille: Hope to see you and all our supporters out there soon...Crows will spread their wings to Portugal! Thanks a lot for the interview.

J. von Crow: I have to go to the toilet now so I have no time for this question sorry!

A. van Crane: Can't wait to see you on the road. Keep an eye on your daughters!

U. del Cuervo: Finally, if you allow, I’d like to say a big THANK-YOU to our incredible Girls-Crew in the back. They are doin’ a great passioned job for Sundown Sindrome by doin’ the myspace-Street-Teams “German Crows” & “USA Crows” and all these profiles on web. It’s a hard work and it’s an important work to support the band and spread the sound. THANK YOU LADIES, YOU ROCK!

M. di Corvo: I hope so too, and again, thanx for your positive words.

Hanna Tsepesh: You guys are very welcome! All the best…

DARKTOWER

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Argos and Galf! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! First of all: how are you guys and how are the things doing with your concerts?

Galf: Hello Hanna, Greetings to all, and thank you for offering us this space. About the shows, they are happening! We started to perform live since we stabilized our lineup and the quantity of dates has increased since the date we unleashed our first work, the demo called Specters' Arrival. The invitations for shows are growing in our territory, and we enjoy doing them. We like being on stage.

Argos: Hello Hanna and hello to all readers of THE GATES OF METAL! As Galf said, the number of shows has increased over the time, according to the growth of our reputation in the scene, but the conditions in the majority are not the most favorable, and this is a serious problem in our country, because the financial situation here is complicated for the people. Most metalheads do not show up in the gigs, and producers eventually reduce the effort in making events due to limited feedback received by the public... But we don’t give up the work ‘cause we believe in our music and always find people who share this sentiment and offer decent conditions for our presentations.

Hanna Tsepesh: For those who do not know DarkTower could tell us a little how it all started?

Galf: The band was a proposal of Argos to put into practice ideas that were not viable in our other project, the Black metal band “Belial War”. So he called me and we began to work on the songs, recruiting musicians that would join our project. Thus born DarkTower.
Argos: Exactly, I left the project we played before DarkTower, the black metal horde “Belial War” that although new, gained some reputation in the local scene. But we were very young and inexperienced, and over the time, the interest of some members died. My desire to create something more complex, both in lyrics and music led me to create the band, still nameless. I invited Galf to participate my project, and together we designed the name DarkTower name that conveyed our vision for the project: A sound with epic influences, with roots in the classics of traditional heavy metal, however extreme, dark and ghostly. This is the origin of the name DARKTOWER.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs to comply with the lyrics?

Argos: Our process does not have many formulas. Sometimes we create a song and associate some lyrical ideas which we use for inspiration. Sometimes we join Galf’s ideas with songs already created, believing that the song share the same feeling of these writings. What worries us most is to create songs that contribute in the quest for our identity, and above all possess musicality and not just a bunch of riffs. We always try to print emotions and feelings of all kinds in our music, thus creating an intense atmosphere.

Galf: We don’t follow a formula for writing. We like to always be able to enjoy our artistic freedom to develop the theme as we want. We prefer that the process always comes to sound honest and convincing. What inspires us is usually what we do with our minds. And we can go far with this!

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands?

Argos: I own a very large taste in metal, and my preferences ranges from Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate, Manowar, Accept, Iron Maiden, Wizard, Rage, to more extreme bands like Dissection, Naglfar, Misteltein, Stormlord, Keep of Kalessin, Dimmu Borgir, Slayer, Sodom, Destruction, Tankard and, for sure, national bands that we admire so much like Torture Squad, Krisiun, Unearthly, Malefactor, Miasthenia, Hicsos, Lacerated and Carbonized, HatefulMurder, Hellbreath, Ainur and many others!

Galf: My preference is guided in Extreme Metal, basically. My favorites are: Naglfar, Keep of Kalessin, Emperor, Sirius, Dissection, Limbonic Art, Opera IX, Nile, Dawn (SWE), Behemoth, Hypocrisy, Misteltein, Dimmu Borgir, Judas Iscariot and others.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had or have any guttural technique lessons? You have any singer that you admire the most? I ask that because I really liked a lot your work in this Demo! You have a great voice to sing this kind of music style and also you are a very versatile singer! I think you will have a great career…

Galf: Thank you for the kind words! I had a few classes in traditional singing, but for a short time.
I really like to use a lot of guttural variations; this is something that enriches the feeling of our music, being in that way, one of the differentials of DarkTower.
I have great admiration for many singers, including Peter of Hypocrisy; Wrath Olivius of Naglfar, Thebon of Keep of Kalessin, Nergal of Behemoth... These are just a few of a long list.
I would also mention that, one reason for the versatility of vocal lines on DarkTower is due to the work not only made by myself but also by Argos, which is responsible for the clean vocals, and also for the supporting guttural in live acts. Niccollo also has a part in this team, making the backing vocals for our parts.

Hanna Tsepesh: When you start to play drums? You have any drum player that you admire the most and why you pick this instrument? I also send you my congratulation for your work in this Demo; I liked a lot your work too!

Argos: I started drumming in 2002, influenced by monsters like Lars Ulrich, with his feeling and simplicity that makes him extremely musical in my opinion, Dave Lombardo and the whole legend that he created around his name and his career, and Nick Menza’s technique and musicality, among others. I greatly admire these drummers and many others who incites me to try to shape a style that is focused not only on extreme speeds but also in simple and rhythmic parts. I owe it also to drummers like Uli Kusch, Tomas Stauch, Asgeir Mickelson, Nickolas Barker and Hellhammer along with the already mentioned musicians.
I appreciate the kind words! I confess that I’m a little lazy in the studies but I try to train always as I can to improve my skills both in drumming and vocals.

Hanna Tsepesh: DarkTower has the second Demo called “Lord ov the VastLands”.Guys I am really surprised with this Demo I really can’t wait to listen a full album! This album is excellent and very powerful and is also very interesting demo to listen we can see a lot of elements! For sure I will give to you guys 10/10 in my review for this amazing Demo! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about your Demo and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Galf: Indeed, this process was a natural evolution. In Lord ov the VastLands, we could count with the effective work of all members in the process of writing songs. This situation has a result much more complete and characteristic than the previous work.

Argos: Again, thanks for the compliments! Well, we already have a previous record, the demo Specters Arrival, which opened several doors, and had copies sold from north to south of our country, besides getting a great response by the critics. We think that this release was a great achievement both in musicality and production, however we think the biggest difference between Specters Arrival and Lord ov the VastLands is the creative process. In the beginning of the project, I was responsible for most of the creative process since I founded the band and had time to work on my ideas. Everyone participated, but somehow, the process went, mostly, worked in my ideas. Nowadays, with the formation stabilized, and above all united and committed, we had the opportunity to work on ideas from all musicians, creating a sound with more influences and more suited to the personality of all DarkTower members. We found this a very important step in our career.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? It was an easy process?

Argos: Yes, we are very proud, because as I said in the past question, this work was done with greater participation from all members, and mainly because it was all recorded and produced by us in PyroZ studio, which belongs to the band members, Niccollo and Hanged, guitarist and bass player respectively. They are new in this business, but many bands with great potential in our state are producing their recordings with them, and there are bands from other regions seeking the studio and we are very happy with it!

Galf: We are very satisfied with the results! The process was as smooth as possible; we try to accomplish all details with great precision. But we do not stop here. We are already working in the progress of the next release, which certainly will be our debut.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the Demo by the media and fans?

Galf: Has been the best possible! Even with so little time of release, it has dramatically increased our number of requests on Myspace. Many people are already singing the new songs in the gigs. That response is something really priceless!

Argos: As told by Galf, the response has been great, many contacts are appearing due to high visitation at our Myspace, and the public already sings the songs of the single! We are scheduling dates at this very moment, in other states to expand this process of promotion and we have many updates to be revealed soon...

Hanna Tsepesh: DarkTower have this Demo for free download, right? Why that decision? Can you guys send the link for our readers download it…

Argos: We decided to liberate the download of this material because it is a single, a mere warm-up for the storm to come! Therefore, we want everyone to have access to this release that represents an evolution in our music. We also wanna use the resources that the Internet provides for promotion because we believe that we can’t fight this movement. It’s part of the evolution of music and of behavior in general. It’s up to us put those tools in our favor.
The link for download is: www.metalmedia.com.br/darktower/darktower_lordovthevastlands.rar

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this Demo and why?

Galf: All songs have their value, and it is really difficult to choose just one of the three. But I get the song Lord ov the Vast Lands.

Argos: I really like all songs of the single. Creatures of Moonlight has an essence more obscure, full of melancholy, and I believe I created a stronger part when I wrote the final part, in which I sing. Lord ov the Vast Lands is the song who best represents our unity and current situation. It was composed and arranged by all members of the band and was originated from Niccollo’s ideas. The song has very powerful riffs, groove and a catchy climax in the clean vocals part, but I'm take The Mightiest Being cause is a strong song, with a intense chorus, and I believe to be the heaviest thing we've written so far.
Still about the songs, we were very satisfied, ‘cause talking with the people, we see that, just as occurred in Specters Arrival, there is no unanimity in choosing a favorite song, and we believe this is due to the uniformity of the work.

Hanna Tsepesh: You guys are thinking to record an album in the future? When we can expect DarkTower album? I am very curious about what you guys can do in one album…

Argos: We are already working on our debut. You can expect powerful songs and an ever-present quest for musical and lyrical evolution. We are working firm in this release, so you can expect something great!

Galf: What you can expect is only the storm to come!

Hanna Tsepesh: I read that you won the Preliminary W:O:A Metal Battle 2009 in Rio de Janeiro. How was that show for the band? Can you tell to us little bit about that? In your country (Brazil) you feel supported by the media and metalheads?

Galf: It was a sensational experience! Surely, this feat has opened many doors for the band, it made us known throughout our country, which is quite large.
About the support, people have bought the merchandising of the band, and give us prestige wherever we are. We are forming a true legion of chaos!
Hanna Tsepesh: Talking about concerts: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour?

Argos: Make a tour through Europe has always been in our plans. We know that the metal scene is strong in the "old world" and we wanna show our power for this audience!
We will begin a search for labels interested in promoting our work in Europe, making our name known in these lands, and thus, making the “so expected for us” passage of the Specters on this side of the Atlantic!
Once we have the opportunity to make this trip, and existing producers interested in bringing DarkTower to Portugal, we will do these dates with great satisfaction!

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Argos: Thanks to everyone who read this interview, know more about our work and about Brazilian Extreme Music!

Galf: We count with your support! Without the strength of the fans we are nothing!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with “Lord ov the VastLands” Demo! We hope to see you guys very soon in here…

Argos: We thank you for the space granted to us Hanna, and hope to see you very soon in Europe!

Argos and Galf: SEE THE FUCKING RISE!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you so much guys and all the best!

DARKSIDE

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Wolf! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know Darkside could tell us a little how it all started and also tell to us the line up?

Wolf: I started out as the classical metal fan of Iron Maiden, Saxon and Judas Priest around 1980. A few years later I had my first band called “Metal Daze” (Manowar song from the Battle Hymns album). When I first heard Metallica, I knew it was time to change also with my music, so my next band was called “Deceiver”. In 1989 I listened to Sepultura and joined a band called “Disgrace” from which ashes finally Darkside arose. Until I joined Darkside I used to sing in all the bands I was in, Darkside already had a vocalist, so they asked me to play keyboards which I did for 10 years. From the “Cognitive Dissonance” album on I changed back to the main vocals. In 2004 an Austrian thrash band called DEMOLITION approached me and asked me to sing for them, which I still do. I also recorded a few other albums and projects apart from those two bands, if anybody should be interested in that please check www.myspace.com/darkside666 for more details.
When I started to listen to metal I used to buy albums, but soon I discovered tape trading and demo tapes as more valuable sources for new music e.g. I bought the first “Testament” demo when they still called themselves “Legacy”, I ordered the “No Life Till Leather” demo from the US and I also discovered “Death” via a tape-trading source. I must admit, that nowadays I don´t follow the underground scene as much as I did in the past, but since I am on myspace, I´m a bit more back into that. You can discover thousands of great bands there every day, one just needs the time….it´s a bit info overflow for me, but still I managed to find some very interesting bands e.g. “Beneath The Massacre” on myspace.
The story of the founding of DARKSIDE goes back a few more years to 1986 when Peter Böhm and Robert Grögler decided to start a band. They first teamed up with a guy called Reinhard Boisits (guitars) and formed their first outfit EXCESS. In 1987 they teamed up with Walter Oberhofer (guitar) and Peter Durst (voc) and renamed the band to DARK SHADOW. After that they stopped their activities for half a year to improve their musical skills and then came together under the name of DISGRACE in early 1988 to record a first demo. Myself, I had started back in 1984 with the band METAL DAZE as a vocalist, then we founded DECEIVER in 1986, already with Walter Oberhofer on guitar. In 1989, DISGRACE approached me, if I wouldn´t like to take over the vacant place of the singer after Peter Durst leaving the band. I agreed and we recorded a demo in 1990 before the band split up in December 1990. In the summer of 1991 a new band began to rise on the metal skies. Initially being only a project founded by bass player Peter Böhm and drummer Robert Grögler , they started to rehearse more intensely during the whole summer and even started to compose some first tunes, based on voivodesque bass riffs and complicated slayer-like drum rythems. A third member to complete the first line-up was found in Peter Durst and he supported those first efforts with his vocals and guitar playing. In spring of 1992 the guys recorded a first four- song demo entitled "Depression" which basically contained four tunes of powerful death metal. Some first experiences on the concert front the band gained by participating on the prestigious ATTACK OF FIRE Festival 1992.
To put a little more atmosphere in their songs, DARKSIDE decided to user the help of a former co- musician to record some piano-intermezzos for this first tape. After listening to it a lot of times, the band agreed on including a stable keyboard player in the line-up. The call for more melody and variety reached me.
Shortly before DARKSIDE were ready to record their second demo, Peter Durst started having some severe health problems with his right arm, so the band was forced to look for a substitute. Herbert Knöchel, a young guitar player from the outskirts of Wr. Neustadt was finally the person to fill out the vacant place and after the recording session ended up as the fifth member of DARKSIDE.
The second demo "Herbst", also recorded in the PAST Studio in Hradec Kralove/CZ , already showed the progression and was a first hint to the direction the band was heading for. Six compositions of doomy, but still powerful death metal clearly showed the way towards a bigger range of melodies and sounds. " Requiem" ,with a running time of about 12 minutes, soon brought some kind of cult status to DARKSIDE in Czech Republic, with the whole demo getting excellent reviews in the czech press. Thanks to the friendship between DARKSIDE and the maybe best death metal act KRABATHOR a series of concerts in Czech Republic / Slovakia followed that brought to the band their strongest support.
After the release of the tape, DARKSIDE took part in the legendary Horepnik-Slamdance amongst others together with ZED JAGO, ARAKAIN, ROOT and more as well as in the ATTACK OF FIRE 93. A first highpoint was the tour together with KRABATHOR and SCABBARD in autumn of the same year through Czech Republic and Austria. DARKSIDE was lucky enough to support CARCASS in Prague in February 1994. After that the band started to rehearse for new material, with the objection of recording a cd on their own, the winter passed quickly and in the beginning of March 1994, DARKSIDE were back on the road supporting KRABATHOR on their Blasphemeous Mini Tour 94.
In May 1994 finally DARKSIDE started with the recording sessions for their first full-length cd "Melancholia Of A Dying World". Within 14 days they laid down the basics and after the album was mastered at the Rudolfinum Studio in Prague (RAGE, Y. J. Malmsteen and others ). Twelve songs full of melodies, melancholy and breathtaking power paired up with female vocals, death-typical grunts and some grinding guitar solos brought the cd to a running time of about 53 minutes. For the band it meant first acknowledging in the foreign countries ( 8 points out of 10 ROCK HARD ) as well as premium rates in the polls of the czech magazines ( newcomer of the year ROCK REPORT, best foreign underground band ROCK REPORT, newcomer album of the year BANG !, 10 out of ten METAL HAMMER CZ ).
The final official release was in September 94 with a first edition of 1000 cds and 1000 tapes. The artwork was done by the famous science-fiction painter Martin Zhouf from Prague. On the concert ground the most important gig for the band for sure was the concert in Prague with CARCASS in front of 2500 spectators, as well as a tour together with VADER and KRABATHOR in Czech Republic and Austria. During this tour there started to be problems with HERBERT KNÖCHEL, which ended by him leaving the band in early 1995. The last show with HERBERT was on November 13, in Ruzomberok / Slovakia together with PHANTASMA, PURGATORY and KRABATHOR.
1995 was an important year for DARKSIDE because they finally reached their long awaited target - a deal with a label. The german company Impact Records, although being originally a punk-label, decided to found a sublabel named SYSTEM SHOCK and DARKSIDE was to be the first band on it. The next band to follow was VADER. Impact offered to release "Melancholia..." with a different cover and booklet artwork all over Europe, what happened in September 1995. Later on the Florida-based independant label CONQUEST MUSIC licensed the album from SYSTEM SHOCK for the USA, Canada and Mexico. On the livesector in 1995 DARKSIDE started to concentrate a little bit more on their homecountry Austria, where they played a series of gigs with VADER, KRABATHOR and some local bands. In November the band went on a tour together with KRABATHOR and DISTILLERY through Poland, but the highlights of the season for sure were the ATTACK OF FIRE 1995 and the festival in Hustopece before an approximate 3500 people, where the security had to stop the show of DARKSIDE two times because of security risks for both band and spectators caused by masses of people invading the stage.
In January 1996 DARKSIDE finally took part in their first european tour together with SINISTER and CREEPMIME, playing 23 shows in various countries. Again also Austria and Czech Republic were on the tourplan of a series of concerts, some of them DARKSIDE played with THERION.

After the end of these activities DARKSIDE began with the work on their second album "Shadowfields" which was interupted by the second european tour supporting SIX FEET UNDER. The last efforts propagating "Melancholia.." were to be the forth concert on the ATTACK OF FIRE 1996 as one of the headliners together with KRABATHOR and SINISTER and a show in the ice-hockey arena of Hradec Kralove / CZ. Right after, the band started the recording sessions for "Shadowfields" in the PAST Studio under the productional wings of VINCENT DIJKERS, a dutch producer. The new album contained a lot of orchestral arrangements mixed with aggression and a very low feeling throughout the whole work.
The release of "Shadowfields" in March 1997, getting excellent reviews throughout the european metal press ( 8,5 points ROCK HARD, 89 points AARDSHOCK , Hansi Daberger from ROCK HARD naming the album among his top favorites of the year and many more ) opened the door for the third european tour in companion of VADER, during the one DARKSIDE played some headliner shows in Italy and Czech Republic, as well as a tour with SCABBARD in Czechia. This tour contained also a festival with SINISTER, HECATE ENTHRONED and BAL- SAGOTH. In late autumn of the same year, DARKSIDE started to work on their third album, tentatively entiteled "III" then.
April 1998 finally saw the band in the HAZIENDA Studio of Milos "Dodo" Dolezal, recording their third cd. The producer they chose this time had a 10 -year experience in producing and his work until now sold well over 2,500.000 copies of various bands, some of them selling over 60.000 pieces in Czech Republic. "Evolution" , so the final title of the album, was mastered by Jan Nemec, a producer well-known for his work with RUNNING WILD, X-WILD, CELTIC FROST and more, in his studio in Hannover, Germany. He also produced the czech band KREYSON, who also sold a lot not only in Czech Republic but also in Germany. The album was released in September 1998 through NSM Records. The band shot their first video-clip for the song " The Gloaming" under the direction of David Beranek, a great czech director for film and TV, on locations in south- Bohemia. On these facts, POPRON s.r.o. licensed the album for Czech Republic / Slovakia. DARKSIDE appeared for the fifth time on the ATTACK OF FIRE Festival that year. Beside that, DARKSIDE once again had the great opportunity to tour with MOONSPELL and THERION, playing 46 shows in 16 countries.
After coming off this tour it was time for a lot of great shows all throughout the year of 1999. DARKSIDE played a lot of prestigious festivals, amongst them NOISE ART in Austria, DYNAMO NORTH POWER JAM in Czech Republic, NEFILIM FESTIVAL in Hungary and to end it all DARKSIDE supported SLAYER and TESTAMENT at Vienna´s prestigious MOM Festival in July 2000. DARKSIDE were invited to record a track for the MEGADETH tribute album on DWELL RECORDS, where the band marked the first spot on the compilation with a heavy version of “Go To Hell”.
The preparations for the fourth DARKSIDE album hadn't gone without any troubles. Robert Gröglerleft the band being replaced by Bernd Pichlbauer. In this line-up the band recorded at track for the Queensryche tribute on DWELL RECORDS, featuring the song “Someone Else” with both, Peter Durst and me on vocals as well as the excellent skills of Martina Hornbacher (Therion, Alas) as third vocalist. Peter Durst left the band, while the producer wasn't satisfied with the new material, which left the band without a new recording. However, all came around, when new material was written (only part of the previously written songs were kept), and a new guitarist was found in Vlastimil Koritar. “Cognitive Dissonance” was then recorded with Peter Boehm handling the bass and vocal duties. But during the live shows he felt he couldn't perform both duties as well as he had liked, which lead to me taking over the vocals. Cognitive Dissonance was actually re-recorded with me on vocals! In the meantime, the band recruited a second guitarist, Radek Hajda (of Czech Grammy Winners 'SILENT STREAM OF GODLESS ELEGY'). DARKSIDE had changed style without ignoring their roots. The signs were set.
In 2001, DARKSIDE played an avalanche of festivals in Austria and Czech Republic, among them NUCLEAR ASSAULT festival, HELL ON EARTH festival and OPEN HELL festival. Finally DARKSIDE supported MEGADETH on a single show in Vienna.
DARKSIDE went on another European tour with MORTICIAN and CARNAL FORGE in early 2002. Markus Grandegger was handling guitar duties on these shows for DARKSIDE.After coming off the tour, Peter Boehm (bass) decided to leave the band, Vlastimil Koritar hooked up back with mates in COLP and Markus Grandegger started having heavy problems with his left arm from which he is not cured until this very day. Sad enough, but all these circumstances meant, that DARKSIDE at that time was nearly non-existing. Finally, in 2003, Bernd Pichlbauer (dr) started his ongoing studies at Vienna University, while I was joining thrashers DEMOLITION for the recording of their third album “Existence”.
In summer 2003 Peter Durst rejoined DARKSIDE officially, some month later he was joined by Thomas Pippersteiner aka Pit of DEMOLITION. Lukas Siska was recruited for drumming duties, hailing from Slovakia, where most of the preparations and the recording of the new album took place all throughout 2005. Towards the end of the year 2003, Peter Boehm, now living in Slovakia, approached the band with the idea of doing some stuff together with a drummer and a guitar player from Slovakia. Some first ideas were rehearsed by various combinations of musicians until in early 2004 Peter Boehm announced his official return in DARKSIDE. Three thirds of the original line-up are back in DARKSIDE, enforced by 3 young, prospective musicians. DARKSIDE played the BRUTAL ASSAULT Festival in 2004.
Right after that, DARKSIDE was ready for some live activities in support of their album “Amber Skeletal Journeys Through The Void”. The band had to suffer one more line-up change shortly before their summer appearances on KALTENBACH OPEN AIR and their support show for MORBID ANGEL. Peter Boehm announced his departure from the band because of private reasons, he was replaced by Daniel Hanak, bass player of the Slovakian death grinders CRANIATOMY.
In autumn 2006 DARKSIDE signed a deal with Austria´s up- and coming metal label NOISEHEAD RECORDS, who offered them to release the album. During January and February 2007 some remixes and overdubbings took place and then the album was in the finishing stages to be released on March 26, the first day of DARKSIDE´s tour with their longtime friends, the Portuguese metal masters of MOONSPELL. Since Pit decided to leave the band in November 2006, Guitar duties on the MoOONSPELL tour were handed over to Janos Murri, axeman of RESURRECTURIS (ITA). After nine years the band was touring again in support of MOONSPELLs Memorial Services 2007. DARKSIDEs “Skeletal Journeys” took them to a few festivals like FUCK THE COMMERCE, SUMMERNIGHT FESTIVAL and Viennas DONAUINSELFESTIVAL before the summer. After some more touring in 2008, Lukas Siska left the band in August 2008 leaving DARKSIDE without a drummer.
The last active line-up of DARKSIDE was:

Wolf – vocals (DARKSIDE, DEMOLITION, MARGINALIA, WAVES, CITITEN X, LACRIMAE CHRISTI)
Janos Murri – guitars (RESURRECTURIS, PRIORITY)
Peter Durst – guitars (THE ANTIPRODUCT)
Daniel Hanak – bass (CRANIOTONY)
Lukas Siska – drums (CRANIOTOMY)

Right now the line-up of DARKSIDE actually consists only of one person, me. Time will tell if there will be a future for this band on the live side. As far as further albums are concerned, I have two albums ready to be recorded. One is “Decayed 1.0” which will sum up the first decade of DARKSIDE by re-recording the best songs of that period and adding some cover songs for a complete review of DARKSIDE´s first decade. The other projected album is “Inferno”, a conceptional album about a young woman in medieval times.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics for Darkside?

Wolf: Well, mostly I deal with very personal topics, but a great source of inspiration for me are all kind of books about religion, conspiracy theories, occult topics, WW II a.s.o. As I already mentioned, I get inspired by a lot of different things in writing my lyrics. I deal a lot with psychological topics, I have big interest in history and science and of course I do follow the daily happenings around the planet. Out of this conglomerate of influences I try to fit the lyrics into the songs, being based on a similar vibe as the music, or depending on atmospheres within the track. Of course I also deal with some typical topics like the stories of H.P.Lovecraft and his Cthulhu myth or some seriál killer stuff, but on a little more sophisticated level, more from the psychologist´s point of view maybe. A writer, which has especially inspired me over the years is an austrian expressionist called Georg Trakl, who has quite a unique technique of describing certain moods or atmospheres by using a lot of abreavisms and surrealistic descriptions, way ahead of time he used to live.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

Wolf: Favorite bands…let me see, for sure I´d have to count MORBID ANGEL, ATHEIST, SLAYER, CYNIC, WATCHTOWER, MOONSPELL, VADER, DEATH, SIX FEET UNDER, but there are so many good bands, so it is really difficult to choose. As far as singers are concerned, I admire Fernando from MOONSPELL for his charismatic appearance and very distinguished use of lyricism, Peter from VADER for his work with VADER in general, Corpsegrinder from CANNIBAL CORPSE for his amazing performance on “Bloodthirst” (the album), but there´s a lot more singers I like to listen to, Bruce Dickinson, Chris Barnes, Schmier and many others.

Hanna Tsepesh: I read that you now have a new project, right? Can you tell to us about that?

Wolf: Right now, I´m focusing on a project called MARGINALIA. I had the concept for it for years lying in my desk, when I encountered Alessandro Vagnoni, a very talented guy from Italy, who entered the ranks of DEMOLITION last summer. When he stayed at my place for some days during the rehearsals for DEMOLITION, we listened to some stuff I did apart from DEMOLITION and DARKSIDE. I told him about the MARGINALIA thing and he would agree to work on it with me. Whilst I am responsible for all the lyrics and the conceptional idea behind this project, Alessandro wrote and recorded all drums, guitars and the basic bass tracks for this album. We will have some guests on the album too, but it is to early to mention any names, but if you are familiar with people I know for a lot of time in the business, you may take a guess (laughs). Anybody interested can find it here (www.myspace.com/marginaliaproject)

Hanna Tsepesh: The band has a new album called “Amber - Skeletal Journeys Through The Void”. For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about this new album and what the band wants to accomplish?

Wolf: The development of DARKSIDE has taken a long time, in fact almost 18 years now. Whilst we started out as a doom death metal band back then, now we play Florida inspired death metal without ignoring our thrash roots…does that make any sense? (laughs)…anyway, I think, “Amber…” is our best album by far. Everything, songwriting wise, technically. Well, what we always tried to express with our music is originality. We never cared about any trends or conventions when creating our art. For Darkside it was never important to have an image, because the music is what builds our image. I prefer to think about creating pictures in our listeners minds when listening to our songs, than to serve them with prefabricated images of some weird worlds. If you just let loose for some minutes and let the music do the talking, you will experience a totally new impression about all the different atmospheres and moods within our songs. T be free to create our art nd to let the same freedom to our listeners or audiences is very important for us. Darkside is a band which cannot be labelled “death metal” or “black metal” or whatever and that is what makes us a little bit outstanding, I think. Of course this kind of approach has made it also difficult for us, because a lot of people simply seem to need this kind of “branding” a band or art in general, but on the other hand we have our own vision about this band and whoever wants to share it with us is more than welcome. You asked me about the most important thing, right ?! To sum it up, the most important thing about our music is probably the final result – the combination of everyone´s individuality through which this band lives! I don´t know, if this is actually something new, but of course, Darkside always tried to be a very innovative, progressive band with its own style. We have a broad musical taste which reaches out from IRON MAIDEN over VOIVOD to MORBID ANGEL and QUEENSRYCHE. When we started to use keyboards combined with raw death metal, nearly nobody did that, except for NOCTURNUS maybe. After that, we started to integrate classical arrangements to our music, also quite unusual for the time we did that and of course we were very exited about playing with experimental structures and progressive patterns on every of our former albums. Quite funny about all that is, that we don´t even do it on purpose… so, we don´t go there and create extremely strange music like a construction kit, but what you hear, is what we like and what comes out of our minds when we sit down and start to work on songs. Actually we really tried to keep the songs as concise as possible and cut out a lot of the really weird stuff we had prepared, but don´t worry, all those parts will be used on our next album. We really tried to keep “Amber - ....” quite simple and not to complex, but for the next album, we will not undergo any compromises, because the next one is going to be a concept album.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Everything went well at recording studio?

Wolf: Actually. We recorded all the basic parts for the album in a studio in Bratislava, Slavakia. We did a first mix and finally finished the album, producing credits went to Peter Durst and myself. After that we were looking for a deal and came across the guys from Noiseheadrecords. Mario, the owner, also has a studio and he offered us to remix the album, which in the end was the final result you can hear now.
I wouldn´t say that the creation process was an easy one, it took us nearly three years to create, record and finish the album, which was mainly caused by the geographical distance of the various members of the band. We drove to rehearsals to Slovakia for over one year, weekends only.
Finishing the album finally in Vienna together with Mario was a great relief and I think we are very proud of the result.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Wolf: All the reactions we got were very positive and the reaction by the audience on tour and on festivals was very satisfying for us after the long process of creation of “Amber…”.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album, what they can do?

Wolf: Simply check out the website of our record label Noiseheadrecords (www.noiseheadrecords.com)

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Wolf: I can´t really tell you which track I like the most cause I dig them all. I find the title track particularly interesting, consisting of acoustic guitars up to 60% and having a length of well over 10 minutes; it is a very epic track and shows the power of this band very nicely.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something? I know that you guys played in same tour then Moonspell. How was your experience for you and the band?

Wolf: Of course it is always a great experience to support well-known bands, but since then I guess we have even taken it one step further by supporting bands like SLAYER, TESTAMENT and MEGADETH as well as PAIN, ATROCITY, AMORPHIS and NAPALM DEATH. We have had quite great reactions from some of those musicians on our new material, which we already partly play live since last summer. To support such big bands gives you the opportunity to learn a lot, to see, how the really big professionals go to work and you can take away a lt for yourself from such shows. Not forgetting about the big chance your band has, every time when supporting such great names before a lot of people.
The thing with MOONSPELL was and is a very particular thing. When we first toured with them in 1998, for me it was a first time experience. I didn´t know their music at all before coming on the tour and it ended up with me being a big MOONSPELL fan which I am to this very day. When we got the chance to tour with them again in 2007, it was like a dream come true for me. Being on tour with a band that is actually your friends is a totally different thing and this friendship is also extended to MOONSPELLS crew and friends of course. Jorge, their sound engineer, did the sound for us on that tour – amazing!!!
I have so many great memories from that tour and I try to refresh them as often as I can by visiting MOONSPELLS shows several times a year.
Whenever DARKSIDE will be ready again to go out and tour, Portugal would be one of the countries we would really really enjoy to play again. We just played two shows there in 1998 but they have remained unforgettable for us.

Hanna Tsepesh: How are the things about metal in your country (Austria)? The bands can get some kind of support from people, magazines, radio, etc.?
Wolf: Judging from sales, I would say yes. Austria surely belongs to the ten most important metal markets in Europe sales wise, I think. The national scene has suffered from a lack of interest over the past view years, but with bands like ABIGOR, EDENBRIDGE, DORNENREICH or HOLLENTHON and the reunion of old heroes like PUNGENT STENCH and DISASTROUS MURMUR, a lot of new bands have grown up to the scene, it is getting stronger again and Austrian bands start to be interesting also for foreign labels. The only problematic point is the support by the media, which, for a few exceptions, is simply non-existing. Bands I could recommend include DEVANIC, IN SLUMBER, THIRDMOON, THE SORROW, MASTIC SCUM, DARKFALL and of course DEMOLITION (www.myspace.com/demolitionat).

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you! Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Wolf: I don´t know, I don´t think that Darkside has the ONE message. Making music has been everything to us since 1991 and to everyone in the band it sure meant different things at certain points in time. For one it was therapy, for the other one fun, for someone else self-destruction or resurrection… Most likely in the first place, we always did our music for ourselves. Obviously it´s nice when somebody else likes what you do and it gives you unforgettable moments for your whole life, but I don´t really think that Darkside has a message to spread apart from “Metal is our life”!
Life is live! As I have an atheistic outlook on the world and it´s inhabitants, I do not care too much about “souls” or whatsoever… I have my own kind of theories about all these things and I try to read as much as I can about all kinds of spiritual philosophies, because this is really something very interesting for me, but I like to keep my personal views on this topic for myself. If you read some of my lyrics you can get a bit of an idea about what´s going on in my head…
For me personally, it is already a big success what we have done with this band and I absolutely don´t care what anybody else thinks about this. It is a success for me personally and I have so much to share for the rest of my life that I would really call this a success. Maybe not in terms of how success is normally measured, but still I think, I wouldn´t have traveled around that much, met so many nice people, without being in this band. The goal is making this as long as possible!
Me, I quit when I die!
I deal with lots of different subjects in my lyrics, but it´s not that I really intend to go out there and preach….whatever. Of course, if I come across something that really catches my awareness; I try to elaborate that in some lyrics, but generally my lyrics are more kind of self-reflective. I try to spare out politics in general, because I don´t think that politics are a topic that goes with rock´n´roll. We had a couple of songs on these topics on previous albums, but nowadays I really try to avoid that.
If you are here as a band with a very special message and you do a limited edition of 250 copies then this message must be a very secret one and meant only for a few people, right?!?!
I guess I´m not the guy to intrigue people with messages, but in these case I´d like to point out that people should not lose their integrity within today’s world. It is something you have inside yourself, you can cultivate it, you can grow it and it is your only and best friend throughout all the difficult decisions have to take every day. It will be your source of inspiration. As long as you can rely on yourself, no harm will ever bring you down, because it gives you security to back up all of the important decisions in life.
The other big topic?
The download syndrome! Something the industry tries to sell as their biggest loss despite of the fact that it was their own invention… I mean, who came up with the digital sound carrier? The fans? Only that evolution was too fast for everybody to react in time I guess
The problem is not so easy to judge I think. On one hand, if the industry looses to much money on their big stars, they cannot afford (or are not willing) to invest more money into smaller bands or non-mainstream music, which results in less opportunity for young bands and artists, while on the other hand, it´s way easier for young bands to spread their music among download forums and get more attention from the fans directly.
I tend to think that the whole system is changing and that there might be a time not so far away, when nobody will buy cds anymore…so the profits will have to be raised on other occasions, because you still need to go to a good studio to record quality music, or at least consult somebody who has good equipment and is able to operate with that in order to achieve a good result. And quality is always expensive… So if the band cannot earn on selling cds, where will they raise the money for the next record? Or where should the company? Music business is not about spending money for nothing, it´s about profits! Ok, you could say, we don´t need all those labels, we can promote ourselves via the web and that´s it!
I don´t think, it´s that easy right now, because the industry is still there and they cooperate with the important media and especially the metal scene is still very old fashioned in this sector, with fanzines and print magazines, not everybody interested in metal has Internet access a.s.o., so now it´s a really hard time for all the bands who don´t have a good record deal with a company who is still able to provide all the important facilities to make a record a success as e.g. promotion, advertisements and also touring budgets of course.
For instance we decided not to send out as much promo cds as we did before, there is a site where everybody can download the whole album as voiceover tracks for a review for free. And I don´t see any reason why somebody comes up telling me “These are voice-over tracks, I can´t write a real good review, because I can´t hear the whole song…” Bullshit! There is a few words spoken on every track, explaining also a bit on the song itself, but you can always hear the music. I think it´s not necessary to enforce the people who put up the promo cd on the web 10 minutes after they get it. I don´t say we earn that much money with our albums, but it´s a difference if you sell lets say 1000 or 3000 copies – it´s the difference whether the expenses for the album are paid or not. I am sure, there´s not going to be high class releases for ever, if nobody buys them! And let´s be honest, it´s not a question of high priced cds, I mean, would the same people who download the album, buy the cd if it was 2 euros less? I don´t think so…

Hanna Tsepesh: Yes, i really understand you! Thanks so much for your answer. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with this fantastic album! We hope to see Darkside very soon in here…

Wolf: Ending this nice interview I would like to hint at a few interesting projects I did in the past. First of all CITIZEN X, a project I realized with Peter Böhm of DARKSIDE a few years ago. We wanted to write an album about the gulf war and our thoughts about it. People can check it out under www.myspace.com/satanation
Another interesting project was working with Dodo, the producer of our “Evolution” album AND Wolfgang Rathgeb, drummer for SKULL CRUSHER, on a project called WAVES. We recorded an entire album called “Songs From The Planet” which sadly enough was never released. We also recorded a few cover versions for American label Dwell Records including “Crystal Mountain” for a DEATH Tribute: Anybody interested can find more at www.myspace.com/wavesaquamusic
I need to thank you for giving us the opportunity to speak out in your Webzine and hopefully we have gained the interest of some of your readers and they will at least check us out on MySpace or take a listen to if they come across our releases. We have been doing this for a long time now but I can assure you that there is still a lot to expect from Darkside in the future.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you Wolf for this important information and words! All the best...

SUPER STAR (Kris Kancler)

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Kris! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! First of all: for those who do not know you could tell us a little how it all started for you in music?

Kris: Started in music at 3 years old. But all I did then was just listen to it. Over and over again. Mostly Kiss, but then on to what was big at the time. Glam was where it was at. But not the poser glam, more the harder edge metal stuff. Like Fear of God, Warrior, Savatage, Helloween, King Diamond and Metal Church as well as everyone else in between. During my teenage years I also got into playing the drums a bit with the bro. He would play lead and we would spend hours in my room rocking out to Britney Fox with him with the windows open just to piss off the neighbors. Now they were glam but so so good!

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any musician that you admire the most?

Kris: My favorite bands are the ones I listed in the previous question. A few more however are Gamma Ray, Edguy, Doro, basically any power metal band from Germany. And to answer your question of who is my favorite musician of all time. Hands down this would be Paul Stanley. Easily the greatest front man of all time. His rhythm skills are incredible and always overlooked and his writing is always powerful and uplifting. I admire him for being such an icon and not adhering to the normal rules of the real world. He set out to do what most will never even bother trying. God bless the guy, innovator and legend.

Hanna Tsepesh: Let’s talk about the “Serenity”; this cd is to raising money to fight Alcoholism and Drug abuse, right? Can you tell to us what we can expect from “Serenity” and why you decided to make this cd?

Kris: Good question Hanna! “Serenity” is the worlds first CD created for the sole purpose to raise awareness to the issue of substance abuse. Yes I know Nikki Sixx did something similar but in a way it was very different. Each of these songs were written with the intention of getting kids to communicate about the dangers of addiction. Its going be revolutionary. In fact that damn thing hasn’t even been completed and has already won an award from www.realcollegetour.com. They called it “The most innovative drug-awareness tool to ever be brought into the schools system” or something like that. I don’t know, but when I got the email I sure did give my-self a pat on the back! I was successful in recruiting some killer names for this project. Past and former members from Savatage, Heart, Kiss, Goo Goo Dolls, Tuff, The Runaways, Quiet Riot, and so many more legends of rock. Ironically all the names on this project were ones that I grew up listening to when I was younger. All with the exception of Veronica from Benedictum. She’s a newbie and as far as I’m concerned, the new Queen of Metal. Each song is a blistering masterpiece of metal and I really think some of them are radio worthy.
I made this CD along with my brother Rock Star to help us convey to as many people that will listen to it that drugs suck and without them you can conquer any dream that your imagination can muster up. However with them, you will die. Its as simple as that.

Hanna Tsepesh: Everything went well at recording studio? You bring a variety of amazing guest musicians. Can you talk little bit about it?

Kris: Yup. Everything went well. Actually the whole experience was and still is so surreal to me. Working with all these wonderful musicians that I grew up adoring and having them put their stamp of flavor on the tunes that were bouncing around in mine and my brother’s head is still an unthinkable concept to me. I don’t want to tout Veronica from Benedictum, too much, ok yes I do, but I have to say, she’s blew the doors off everyone in that room the day she recorded Mistress Insidious. I think we are all still a bit shell shocked by her performance. I also feel compelled to mention how amazing Zak Stevens from Circle 2 Circle and Savatage has been to work with. Although he cut his vocals from Florida, he has been a blast to work with via phone and email. The guy can sing a phone book and sound incredible.

Hanna Tsepesh: The producer is Bob Kulick, right? How was to work with him?

Kris: Bob is short on words all the time. He just gets shit done. His decisions are quick and instinctual. I grew up wondering about this guy and always thought he was some sort of guitar god. He has prove his musicianship time and time again throughout the years and I am blessed to have him be so involved on this project. I also want to mention that Brett Chassen is co-producing this effort with Bob. Brett is a funny and very crafty musician that I can honestly say has lended up some absolutely great ideas for some of our tunes. Him and I kind of bonded during the recording of this CD. I kind of feel like he took me under his wing a bit to try to mold me into a better musician and sometimes a better person. Very insightful and knows everything about every president in our History.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy “Serenity”, what they can do?

Kris: Hurry up and go to www.weareoneonline.org and click on the link to merchandise. There they can purchase the CD (right now for pre-order) in its entirety and know that 100 percent of the proceeds go straight back into the foundation and some into the various programs that we use everyday to help our kids stay sober.

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this Cd and why?

Kris: I would have to say the song “Serenity” is my favorite. My brother came up with the riff many years ago on the piano. Last year when we started this project we sat down and imagined it with some guitars and some orchestration. We wanted a Savatage feel to it and knew it was to need a powerful and moving melody and some meaningful words. That s when I went upstairs and 20 minutes later, came down with the most perfect melody and set of lyrics. Ultimately the song was written from me to my brother Rock Star but by design was crafted in such a way that everyone can relate it to it.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?
Kris: If your struggling with the disease of addiction, tell someone. Scream it out at the top of your lungs until you find the help that will convince you its time to sober up. And if your in recovery, keep forging ahead. I know from personal experience that I built up all around me, some almost unconquerable obstacles, but I’m finding one by one that the only thing that’s unconquerable is me. Stay strong and resilient and you will someday soon find your own Serenity.
Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes a big success on this fantastic CD! I really hope that you guys change people minds about this disease that plague our world today and help more the people to become more aware. Thank you for this great idea!

Kris: You’re welcome and I the opportunity to get this out there via your help. I also want to direct people to our individual websites. Mine is www.superstarsuperstar.com and my brothers are www.rockstarrockstar.com. They both are there to show the world that anything is possible when deciding to stay sober.
