HOLY RAGE (CHRIS JOHNSON and Al Atkins [ex. JUDAS PRIEST])

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Chris Johnson and Al Atkins! Thanks so much for accepting this interview I know that you guys are little bit busy at the moment! First of all: how are you guys and how are the things doing with your concerts?

Chris Johnson: Hi Hanna! Things are very hectic at them moment which is great! Being a busy band is always good! With Al’s book “Dawn of the Metal Gods” and the new global CD release things are looking pretty excellent.

Al Atkins: I'm good, concerts are coming in now and next year looks positive with some new promoters working with us that will see us touring Europe and USA ,some dates are already confirmed for Dallas.. Chris and myself are busy doing other media stuff too with interviews like this and lots of radio . I would still like to see us play some of the big fests in the UK like 'Download', that would be great .

Hanna Tsepesh: For those who do not know Holy Rage could tell us a little how it all started?

Al Atkins: The band started out as the 'Al Atkins Band' to promote my 5th solo Demon Deceiver album in 2007 and went through various member line ups until we got to this one which is Chris (guitar), Scott Dallow (bass) Mick Hales(drums) and myself on vocals. I decided to give the band a title and came up with the 'Holy Rage' .

Chris Johnson: Holy Rage essentially is (or was) the Al Atkins Band. Al decided to change the name as, hey, none of us will be doing this forever. So if there was ever a lineup change a new singer would not have to change his name by deedpole! I met Al a few years ago, discovering we were actually related! My wife (Al’s cousin) introduced us. A few months later Al asked me to record on Victim from Demon Deceiver. After becoming good friends as well, we soon discovered we had more history than we thought. My uncle was actually Rob Halfords partner, I grew up with the guys from JP in the Yew Tree estate in West Bromwich where it all started when I was young, it is really weird that 30 years later I would be playing for the guy who started it all.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics for Holy Rage? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs to comply with the lyrics?

Chris Johnson: A bit of both really! For instance with Give them hell, Al came up with the lyrics and song in his head, came to the studio and said, it goes like this, I jammed a riff to his idea and BANG we had a great song! The guy is a genius!

Al Atkins: I usually write the songs , i write the music first and lyrics to fit and the band add that great wall of sound which makes the songs sound much heavier.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands?

Chris Johnson: ABBA! (laughs)

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs) Good one!

Chris Johnson: nah seriously, I have been very lucky to meet quite a few. Graham Bonnet being one of them. I loved him in Alcatrazz with Vai and Malmsteen. Skid Row is another.
Apparently I am not allowed to mention Nickelback as people threaten to hit me. Eh Al?
If I had to say ONE BAND, I would say Whitesnake. Again Vai played his part but 1986 has to be one of my all time favorite vinyl’s.

Al Atkins: I am a big fan of 'Black Label Society' ,Zakk Wylde is a great guitarist and i have just added one of their songs to our live set list 'Suicide Messiah'.I also like 'Slayer' a lot .There are so many bands i like, too many to mention but mainly all heavy metal.

Hanna Tsepesh: Chris, when you start to play guitar? Any musician inspired you to pick this instrument? Also can you talk little bit about your career?

Chris Johnson: My influences. Ok I would say: Vai was most influential on me. He is just one amazing musician. As for my musical career I never really had one! Yes I was in many bands in the 80’s. Nothing to speak of. However my passion for guitar was realized when I opened the first (as far as I know) guitar sample website in 1998 for collaboration purposes. That was just mental, 2 million hits in 2 years, I was on god knows how many CD’s, in sampling mags in places like Australian and USA, my mailbox was always full!
I took it down after 5 years. It really took up too much time!

Hanna Tsepesh: Oh, very cool Chris! Al Atkins, I would like to know, how do you keep your vocal ability after all these years and also you have any singer that you admire the most?

Al Atkins: My voice has got more grittier with age it's all down to the whiskey and cigarettes over the years but i stopped smoking a long time ago now and i am hitting some more high notes again , in fact i like the feel of my voice now more than i ever did before.
I admire singers who continually sing year in , year out touring the world and still keep that great quality in their voice and still hit those high notes like: Bruce Dickenson and Rob Halford.

Hanna Tsepesh: About the past with Judas Priest, I would like to ask what was the big and worst with Judas Priest?

Al Atkins: One of the bigs was playing alongside the great Phil Lynott and 'Thin Lizzy' at Stafford Borough Hall, UK in 1972...a great gig to remember the man by. One of the worst was travelling across the Irish Sea in bad weather to play the 'Palace Lido' in 72' on the Isle of Man , we were all sick overboard , we played a great gig but didn't fancy the return trip.

Hanna Tsepesh: Some of my readers ask me to ask you why you left Judas Priest band. To clarify the things can you answer this?

Al Atkins: I was the only one married with a child who i hardly saw, in 72' we played about 150 gigs up and down the country and the bigger we got the more overheads we got and without that record deal we hardly made a living out of all our hard work. So in May 73 things came to a head with me and i decided to leave the band for a normal 9 to 5 job, I was replaced by Rob Halford. I next formed a band called 'Lion' with Bruno Stapenhill (bass) ex JP1, Harry Tonks (guitar) and Pete Boot (drums) ex Budgie and started out just playing weekends so I could hold down my job for the extra income I needed with a family to feed but within a year I turned pro again band due to demand of work, 'Lion' were one of the best bands I had ever played with but we never got that lucky break and finished around 78'.

Hanna Tsepesh: You co-write many of Judas Priest biggest songs. Of all the songs that you co-write, what is your favorite and why?

Al Atkins: It has to be Whiskey Woman, a song about a fallen lady I wrote in about 72', when Rob took my place he bought in some of his own songs, one being called 'Red Light Lady' which was in the same vein so the band joined them together and re titled it 'Victim of Changes' and 'Classic'.

Hanna Tsepesh: You recently write a book called “Dawn Of The Metal Gods: My Life In Judas Priest & Heavy Metal”. Can you talk little bit about this book and what you want to accomplish with “Dawn Of The Metal Gods: My Life In Judas Priest & Heavy Metal”?

Al Atkins: The book is about myself growing up in and around Birmingham with the 60's and 70's music scene that influenced me and lots of other musicians at the time and how they all evolved like 'Earth' dropping their bluesy sound for something more sinister in 68' and changing their name to Black Sabbath, it covers the story of how Judas Priest first started out too in 69' and how KK Downing didn't make it through the first auditions for them. Their are lots of interesting facts and what I wanted to accomplish with the book was to set the records straight for the first time about certain things like who ,what and where in the Judas Priest early history.

Hanna Tsepesh: Your last solo album is “Demon Deceiver”. What is the big different for you between this album and the previous one? You have some Judas Priest old songs in there, right?

Al Atkins: I think my albums have got heavier with each one I've done and I like to use various musicians on each one like Brian Tatler (Diamond Head) Simon Lees (Budgie). This album is now being released by Angel Air Records which comes out on August 10th with two added bonus tracks by my new band the 'Holy Rage' which are even heavier, one which features Bernie Torme (Gillan, Ozzy) as a guest player. Yes there are a couple of Priest songs of mine on there and if I'm honest I thought it might help push the sales of the album, sometimes things like that work for you and sometimes against.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?
Al Atkins: Great but it only got distributed across Europe first time round by a Swedish Record Company and now I have handed it over to Angel Air Records for worldwide distribution.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album safely, what they can do?

Al Atkins: It will be available from 'AUGUST 10TH' on Angel Air Records or you will be able to purchase it from usual outlets or our websites: www.alatkins.com and www.myspace.com/alatkinsholyrage

Hanna Tsepesh: When we can wait for a Holy Rage album? Can you talk little bit about that?

Chris Johnson: “Demon Deceiver Plus” really started it all for “Holy Rage”. As I said I played on Victim and was a core member of the band by then. But things started to change a little, we wanted a heavier, with a BIGGER sound. We achieved this live, however with the release of the CD we needed two bonus tracks. So now those two tracks are pure Holy Rage, Give Them Hell and Void to avoid which features a cameo solo from Bernie Torme. You should be aware that Demon Deceiver itself was a 4 year project. And a damn fine CD it is too.

Al Atkins:I have started writing more songs again recently (time permitted) I now have 5 kids and two great grand kids who i tell not to shout out Granddad in public. (Laughs). I think you go through times when songs seem to dry up and then times like now when you are full of ideas for them. I would love us to record a Holy Rage album so lets see what happens.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Chris Johnson: Only if I get lots of free Port! (laughs) I would love to come to Portugal. The problem we “had” was relying on a promoter that just could not pull anything decent off. There were many attempts and guarantees, all failed. It is a tough life for musicians to be able to get out there you know? I am sure many readers will agree! We are at this point looking for a band promoter, media we got covered thanks to Willy Forrest.

Hanna Tsepesh: For sure you have many fans in here that will give you Porto wine Chris (laughs)! And, yes i know is really sad that situation and i hope some promoter in here make that happen...

Al Atkins: We will play anywhere and would love to go to Portugal so if any promoter is reading this...'BOOK US TO PLAY PORTUGAL.'

Hanna Tsepesh: He really hope that too Al! Do you want to send any message for your fans?

Chris Johnson: Absolutely, if you come to a gig and spot me, buy me a beer! Don’t be shy! Stay safe and I am sure we will see some of you soon!

Al Atkins: Yes, Thanks for all the support out there from 'metal heads' everywhere and we hope to see you on the road very soon.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success and luck for the future concerts! We hope to see Holy Rage very soon in here…

Al Atkins: Thanks very much Hanna for the interview, hope to meet up with you one day for a beer or two. And everyone out there 'KEEP THE FLAG FLYING FOR METAL MUSIC’ Thanks.

Chris Johnson: Cheers Hanna! STAY METAL!

Hanna Tsepesh: You guys are very welcome and thanks so much for your words and for sure we will meet in here to drink some beers and Porto wine (laughs)! All the best...

GRAVEWORM

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Stefan! Thanks so much for accepting this interview; I know you are little bit busy at the moment! For those who do not know Graveworm could tell us a little how it all started?

Stefan: Graveworm was formed in 1992. We are a death metal band who played a lot of coversongs from bands like cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Massacre and other. One day we got the chance to play at a local festival but our problem was that we dont got a bandname . So we took a dictionary and the first word we found that sounded suitable to us and to our music was Graveworm. After a while we introduced a keyboard in our band because we liked the german band Crematory and the melodies and atmospheric parts of their music. We started writing new songs and after one year during a local festival we get in contact with the German record label serenade records. After sign a contract there we recorded our first demo tape and our first album. And now we are here with our seventh album and ready to hit the road.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Stefan: The lyrics where written after the songs are finished. I get the finished songs and then I start writing the lyrics. So it´s easier for me. I got my inspirations from different ways. Medias, television, books or personally stuff.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

Stefan: When I start playing in a band my favorite Singer was Lars Göran Petrov from Entombed. A really great vocalist with a fantastic and unic voice. Nowadays my favorite one is the vocalist of In Flames. He is a great entertainer on stage and has great voice.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had any singing technique lessons for growlng? I also take this chance to send my congratulations for you and for the entire band for your career and for the amazing albums!

Stefan: No, I tried one day to get some lessons. But when the teacher heard my voice for the first time he told me that was not possible because this was not a singing style (I screamed and growled like hell...[Laughs])

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs) cool! Graveworm have a new album called “Diabolical Figures”. This new album is incredible I am so damn addicted to this album! Once again you guys make an amazing work! I liked a lot all the music’s! I really can’t say anything bad about it! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “Diabolical Figures “and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Stefan: Our new album “Diabolical Figures” is for me personally a mix between our previous one Collateral Defect and Engraved in black. The songs are more aggressive but at the same time still melodic and atmospheric. I think this is the way of Graveworm. At one side aggressive at the other side melodic. Personally I would describe our sound as dark metal. I don´t like to be melodic black metal. If you will call it dark metal you can work with different music styles.

Hanna Tsepesh: You guys also made a cover from “Message in a bottle” (a very success 80's pop music), you guys always amazing us with cool covers and this one is really fantastic with a lot of Graveworm energy! Any reason for chose this music for a cover?

Stefan: Not really. Eric got the idea of doing this cover because he really likes the band. I like to do this covers because it makes a lot of fun. Important for me personally is that the song must sound like a Graveworm song at the end. It makes no sense only to play the song in the same way and add a death or black metal voice on it. We have some ideas for the future too… so you will see or hear.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Everything went well at recording studio?

Stefan: completely satisfied. The sound is great and really powerful . We got a lot of work in the studio but at the end the result is great... And the fact of working with Andy Classen helped us . He is really professional and great producer.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Stefan: I got a lot of good responses from the medias. Most important are the fans who get the album. I really like to know if they like it or not… Because we all in the band are music fans too.

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Stefan: My favorite song on that album is Diabolical figures, because he goes straight to the head and it´s a killer song with a killer riff ad the beginning. I really locking forward to play the song live. I´m curious to see whats´happen in the crowd.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour?

Stefan: Yes we are working on a European Tour in December. Hope this will work out because we want to promote our album as possible as we can. Beside this we will play some shows at the weekends and some festivals in summer. And we will play for the first time in countries like Ukraine and Mexico

Hanna Tsepesh: Can you give any advice for young bands that are starting? Also, what are the lessons you learn along your career?

Stefan: Never give up and have fun in doing what you do… that´s the way of Graveworm. We never get any lesions. We all learn by ourselves.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for your fans out there?

Stefan: Enjoy our new album and I hope to see you all on the road…

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success with “Diabolical Figures”! We hope to see the entire band very soon in here…

Stefan: Thanks for this opportunity and I hope to see you soon too…

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome Stefan, thank you!

REBELLION

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Uwe Lulis! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know Rebellion could tell us a little how it all started?

Uwe Lulis: Thanks, well Rebellion started in 2001 when I left Grave Digger.Tomi and I had some cool songs ready to go, and the idea, to make a concept album about Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Then we did it...a Record deal with Drakkar Records made all this happened.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Uwe Lulis: At first of all I’m writing all the Music, then Tomi is starting with the lyrics. A lot of Arrangement and Sound designing during the Songwriting, of course. We’re creating a lot in the Studio.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any guitar player that you admire the most?

Uwe Lulis: Well, in the early days I was listen to Gary Moore and Michael Schenker a lot, but on these days, I don´t listen to other guitar players….basically I don’t care about other guitar guys. I’m sure, that there a lot of guys, that can play the Guitar fantastic, but my focus is on other things.

Hanna Tsepesh: When did you start to play guitar? Any reasons for you pick this instrument? I take this opportunity to send you my congratulation for your amazing work in this album!

Uwe Lulis: Thanx a lot, I’m really proud of the Album. But don’t forget, that Simone did a lot on this album, too.
I started with 5 Years on a Music High school here in Germany with classical guitar., and after 7 Years I was ready to go for the Electric guitar With 12 I Joint my first band, I had a few bands till I joint Grave Digger with 19. The reason, why I picked that instrument? Well, my parents realized that I had talent on this Instrument and in Music anyway, and decided to send me on that Music school.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band has a new album called “RISE - FROM GINNUNGAGAP TO RAGNARÖK - The History of the Vikings - Volume III”. This new album is amazing Uwe! I liked a lot the lyrics, riffs are super strong and Michael keeps the strong voice! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about this new album and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Uwe Lulis: I wanted to push Rebellion into the 21st century in Sound and Songwriting. I´m personally listen to more modern stuff, and love to downtune my guitar and beat the shit out of it. And that´s, what I tried to transport into my music. I think “Arise” is one of the powerful albums, I ever written. I´m really proud of it. Letz see, how the Album works in the next time. Here in Germany, we’re getting a lot good feedback of it. All Magazines are putting us in the Top list, which is a cool thing….Metal is the law!

Hanna Tsepesh: Everything went well at recording studio? The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something?

Uwe Lulis: No, not really. Everything was smooth. I’m doing all the Recordings, Mixes and Mastering at my Studio here in Frankfurt. It was a lot work, of course, but this kind of work always brings me fun.
And if you have the chance, to work with so fantastic musicians, it’s double-Cool.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album safely, what they can do?

Uwe Lulis: Go on our Website: www.rebellion.st and order it in our Store. Or download it on Itunes.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is your favorite music in this album and why?

Uwe Lulis: I love “Asgard” a lot. This Song is deep, dark and Metal. Michaels Voice is so much killer on that. And the Solo from Simone is kickin´, too
But don’t get me wrong, the whole album is killer, too. I love all the Songs.

Hanna Tsepesh: Yeah this album is really great! The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Uwe Lulis: Yeah, every Band is thinking about tours and stuff, the Problem is to finance that. Maybe we’ll work out something like that in the next time. We’ll see. If we have something ready to go, we’ll announce that on our website and the press.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Uwe Lulis: Yeah, first of all all big hello to all Metalheadz in Portugal. I hope, we can meet soon and have a strong Metal party with Rebellion and you, guys. Metal forever!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you so much Uwe! We hope that too!

IN PROCESS

Hanna Tsepesh: Terve (Hello in finnish) Kalle! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know In Process could tell us a little how it all started?

Kalle: Terve! I think the idea to form the band we are now came to me almost seven years ago. There has been many different line-ups before we managed to have these members and the band we have now. Actually our name “In Process” in a way comes from those processes. The first members of In Process are me, Tuukka and Juho. We had some discussions about how it would be cool to have very aggressive and groovy mental band that has honest lyrics about faith, doubts and the grievances of the world.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics for IN PROCESS?

Kalle: The main inspiration to lyrics I write comes from the thoughts that I need to deal with. Sometimes one just needs to yell one’s mind out. I think almost every lyric I have written express a problem or dilemma I have or something bad that has happened. My lyrics are influenced by the world around me. As a Christian I have a certain aspect in my lyrics which you can find very easily. I like to express my faith very honestly with all the doubts I have. I hope my lyrics provoke deep thoughts in our listeners.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

Kalle: I have pretty many favorite bands with very different type of music because I like to listen to the music that expresses the feelings I have. But as we are talking about metal music I'm a big fan of groovy metal bands such as Soulfly, Sepultura, Sotahuuto, Living Sacrifice etc.
When I started to growl I liked Max Cavalera’s voice a lot - as I still do - but nowadays I try to reach very low frequencies because I have the physics for that (I weight 150 kilos [laughs]).

Hanna Tsepesh: IN PROCESS have a debut EP called “Memento”. I think this EP is very interesting and I really liked a lot! My favorite music is “Memento Vivere”. For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “Memento” and what the band want to accomplish with this first work?

Kalle: Thank you! The Memento is our first official aspiration to offer the listeners what we are made of and to give some knowledge to people about us. We chose our favorite songs to this EP from the songs that we had at the time. The new songs we have made after the last studio sessions are more groovy and aggressive. We are really looking forward to publish a full length album some day, but we haven't done any further plans for it.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Everything went well at recording studio?

Kalle: Yea, we are definitely pleased with the sound we have in Memento. Something that we are about to have more in our music is richer percussions. Everything went very well at the studio. We had the time to do some pre-recordings before we went to the Juho Räihä’s studio to do our official recordings. It really helped us to record exactly what we wanted because we kind of had done the recordings once already.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans so far?

Kalle: Pretty good and supportive. I have heard many guys tell that they really like the Memento, but that it also has an issue: they think that it is too short. I have to say that it is very nice to hear that people really like our stuff and I hope that they want to hear from us later on as well.
The media has given some pretty good reviews on our EP. They think that we have pretty good potential. As we keep playing and working with the new material we hopefully manage to have more of our own sound and find our own strengths.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band have some plains to record an album in the future?

Kalle: Yes we do. At the moment we are working with new material and hopefully in near future we could publish our first full length album. Before the new album, we are planning to do as much gigs as possible.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your EP safely, what they can do?

Kalle: Well there are many websites where you can order our EP. Just go to Google and type our and the EP’s name, but I can say one place where you can order Memento safely for sure; from Finnish Christian music shop Underground Record Store. From there you can probably find the other places to buy it too.
www.maanalainenlevykauppa.com/epages/Gagar.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Maanalainen/Products/ML018

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Kalle: You mean favorite song? I like the Memento Mori because it reflects our root sound with groovy and aggressive touch. It also reminds that some day we all die and that we should respect our life and live full life loving each other.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Kalle: Hey you! Now that you have read something about us please visit in our myspace (www.myspace.com/inprocessfin) and listen to our song Memento Mori for free and check some live footage from our gigs. If you like our stuff feel free to order our EP. There is also some T-shirts available that you can order straight from us.
We really appreciate if you have time to tell us what you think about our music.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with “Memento” EP! We hope to see In Process very soon in here…

Kalle: Thanks! Yea that really would be something, who knows. Maybe one day…

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome Kalle! For sure we will see In Process very soon in my country!

THE SEVEN GATES

Hanna Tsepesh: Salut Michel and Vincent! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! First of all: how are you and how are the things doing with your concerts?

Michel : Well we are fine, thank you ! About the tour with Exmortus, we had to postpone it for the moment due to the lack of competence from the touring agency, but still we’ll play some shows this summer.

V: Also in France in Nov/Oct/Dec and certainly another tour in march. I think that we do all ourselves to be sure of All.

Hanna Tsepesh: For those who do not know The Seven Gates could tell us a little how it all started?

Michel: It started back in 2005, Vincent and myself had been playing in several bands before we joined forces, and we both wanted to play the same kind of music. We started as a 4 pieces-band. I think this is the best set-up as a death metal band.

V: We released a mcd 2 years ago, a video last year, who appear into the collector edition of the new album “angel of suffering”, out just now!

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics for The Seven Gates? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs to comply with the lyrics?

Michel: It all depends.. Sometimes we build up both lyrics and music at the same time. What inspires me is the obscure side of things, what is unseen, what makes me angry.

V: Our inspiration is from our daily suffering, we denounce and exorcise all of them into our music and lyrics. Death metal is a good taste for that.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer and bass player that you admire the most?

Michel: My favorites bands are: Nile, Possessed, Nocturnus, Black Sabbath, I could go on for ages! But I also do listen to stuff like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Frank Sinatra, early Bowie, Roland Dyens, and things like that. By the way, Dyens is a hell of a guitar-player!

V: My favorites are: Lemmy, tom Araya, David Vincent …the reasons are logic! About my favorites bands, it’s difficult to say, I listen a lot of kind of music, my favorites one is original soundtracks from stuff like Conan, Hellraiser, Dracula,….Also I like Shinning, Emperor, Slayer, Bolt Thrower, Deicide, Bathory, Fields of the Nephilim….and ton of others!

Hanna Tsepesh: Cool Vicent, i like a lot this soundtracks too! When you start to play bass? Any reasons for you pick this instrument? Also, you have or had any guttural technique lessons?

Vincent: In fact something like 25 years ago but I’ve stopped during a long time to learn each instrument, when I released 2 solo albums 10 years ago. I taken bass into T7G, 4 years ago by hazard, I was only singer, and I finally add this option. ..It feel my vocals more ingressives! Some lesson? Ok, the only way is suffering! (Laughs) and controlling your breath!

Hanna Tsepesh: (Laughs) thank you for your answer! The band has a new album called “Angel Of suffering”. I am very surprised with The Seven Gates talent! I liked so much this album and I think that have all the essence of Death Metal. For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “Angel Of suffering” and what the band want to accomplish?

Michel: The best thing to say is: we are death metal fans and we want to play the music we’d like to listen to that no one has yet played. We’ve been playing death metal for years now, and we like it! So we just create on our own, and this mostly is an egocentric pleasure!

Hanna Tsepesh: Everything went well at recording studio? The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something?

Michel: You can always improve yourself, of course...Well, actually, I recorded all the guitar parts within 2 days, so I feel my work is being pretty fair.

V: We was ready when we entered in studio, I recorded all my vocals in 2 hours! The result is better than my hopes.
Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Michel: For the moment, we had excellent response to it, and that is great!

V: Some delay, some guys who can’t understand our stuff…but in generality the chronics are very positives, and a lot of fans are manifesting their enthusiasm onto our MySpace.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album safely, what they can do?

Michel: You should order it from your local music store, crush it, buy another one, grind it, buy another one, smash it, and buy another one...

V: Our distributor into Europe is Plastic Head from UK. He distribute after to all distributors into Europe, I’m sure that there is a society in Portugal who work with them. If not there is Season of mist!

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Michel: “Angel of Suffering” because I came up with this track so quickly it’s like playing a cover of a song I didn’t write, and which sounds terrific!

V: ”Quake of the hammer” for me, it’s an epic picture of war! This song send a lot of images and emotions! She is the despair!

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Vincent: We really hope and are open to all propositions. Our light engineer is Portuguese, so there is no any problem of logistic and language. Our tour bus of death is ready to burn!

Hanna Tsepesh: How is the metal scene in your country (France) is easy to get some kind of support by Radios, Magazines, webzines, etc.? What is your opinion about the Metal in our days? Did you thing is poor or better?

Michel: The French scene is really great! There are some ass-kicking bands like Mithridatic, Bloody Sign, Offending, etc.. Metal music has evolved a lot through the past years, and leaves less and less space for amateurs. This is very important when you want your music to sound extreme and brutal, and metal musicians are going better and better here in France!

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

V: burn your soul!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with “Angel Of suffering”! We hope to see The Seven Gates very soon in here…

Vincent: Very thanks for your support Hanna, Hope to come on tour ! Listen to the song of the dead!

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome Vicent! For sure we will see you guys in here!
