EUROPE

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Joey! First of all thanks so much for accept this interview at THE GATES OF METAL! It is a great opportunity to show a little bit about EUROPE to your fans in Portugal and around the world! So, for the people who don’t know or do not remember when EUROPE started can you tell us a little bit about it?

Joey: I saw Norum perform when I was around 15 years old with a band called WC. He really impressed me. We started to hang out together and soon formed the band Force.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands at the moment?

Joey: I'm into bands like: Audioslave and Muse.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your inspirations to create the lyrics for EUROPE?

Joey: I make notes all the time when I travel and when I'm at home in London. Everything from personal stuff to more worldly events seems to slip into my lyrics.

Hanna Tsepesh: When did you start to sing? Any musician inspired you to start?

Joey: I Started to play guitar very early maybe 8-9 years old. I soon realized that my passion was writing melody and words. Singing was just a part of expressing myself. In the early years I was inspired by David Bowie and Elton john.

Hanna Tsepesh: You also play guitar and piano. Why did you start to play these instruments?

Joey: My sister is 4 years older than me and she took piano and guitar lessons. My parents bought some instruments to have at home for her to practice on. She stopped after a while and I picked them up.

Hanna Tsepesh: Let’s talk a little bit about your great success album “The Final Countdown” in 1986! What was your feeling in that time with that big success with this album?

Joey: It was the third album. We had already toured quite a lot and we were getting better at writing songs. We were also very ambitious and wanted to bring our music onto the international scene. We got a major deal with CBS/Sony in New York.

Hanna Tsepesh: How it was the “The Final Countdown “phase? A little bit crazy I guess…

Joey: We started to tour outside of Scandinavia. Everywhere! Crazy days indeed.

Hanna Tsepesh: I can only image! I have 3 questions that one big fan of your work told me to ask you: What were your inspirations to write The Final Countdown song? What do you want to accomplish when you make that particular album?

Joey: We wanted to write an opening song for our show, it was an important time for us. We wanted to reach out to a wider audience.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is the feeling to listen to other bands playing your songs and make some cool covers?

Joey: Some covers are all right some are xxxx. But it’s mostly flattering i guess…

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs) yes it is! Annoys you a little that the band is more recognized because the final countdown song?

Joey: It all right, it also makes people curious to hear other songs.

Hanna Tsepesh: Did you feel some pressure in the past to make one more successful album like "The Final Countdown"?

Joey: It was our job, so we just had to start writing for the next one. There was a lot of touring around TFC so we had to work hard to write for OOTW.

Hanna Tsepesh: You also have 3 solo albums, the first one was in 1995, the second in 1997 and the last one in 2002(I think)! Why have you decide to make these 3 solo albums? These albums are a little bit different from what you do in EUROPE? Did you miss EUROPE?

Joey: I wanted to do something different. It was meant to be just one album but it became three. Then I really started to miss the boys in Europe again.

Hanna Tsepesh: It was great experience for you to make these 3 solo albums? Have you learned new things with that?

Joey: I studied lot singer-songwriters. Like Jackson Brown, Dylan, Neil Young. I wanted to learn more about song writing. I brought some of that knowledge with me when we started Europe again. Specially the lyric-writing

Hanna Tsepesh: Now you have new LIVE album called “Europe- Almost Unplugged”! Why the band decided to make it?

Joey: It was meant as a webcast for our fans. It turned out pretty cool so we wanted to release it as a c.d. and DVD.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is the biggest concert for you with EUROPE so far and why?

Joey: The most special night was probably millennium eve in Stockholm.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are the future plans for EUROPE in the future?

Joey: Our new c.d. "Last look at Eden" is ready and will come out in August/September 2009. It's simply majestic!

Hanna Tsepesh: Great new, thanks so much for inform us! How do you see EUROPE in 20 years?

Joey: Surfing in Hawaii...
Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs) cool! You will come to Portugal in this summer, right? Did you know that you have lot of BIG fans in here waiting for that moment?!

Joey: We're playing in Portugal this summer for the first time. Looking forward to it.

Hanna Tsepesh: Joey tell to us, what are the highest and lowest points in your career and why?

Joey: Touring in America with Def Leppard was pretty cool. The too long of a break from the band was pretty boring...

Hanna Tsepesh: Some people saying that EUROPE is a Pop band and others say that is a Rock band! I personally think that EUROPE is a Rock band! To clarify the things, can you tell to us if EUROPE is Rock or pop band and why?

Joey: A rock band you can feel with your whole body and soul. There is also constant desire to better yourself as a musician. A pop band may just wash through your head. On a good night we are one of the best rock/live bands around.

Hanna Tsepesh: What is your favorite EUROPE song and why?

Joey: Just can't answer that. I like too many! Last look at Eden is pretty cool. You'll hear it soon…

Hanna Tsepesh: Last question: Do you want to send any message for your Portuguese fans out there and the fans that always support EUROPE?

Joey: Thank for being there all through the years. Hopefully we'll see you in Portugal soon. The future is bright!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks so much for your answers and your time! THE GATES OF METAL wishes you a great success with the new alive album “Europe- Almost Unplugged”! All the best…

Joey: Thanks, you guys. All the best!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks so much for the opportunity! See you guys in summer…

DAVID ELLEFSON ( Megadeth, F5 , Hail)

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello David Ellefson! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know you could tell us a little how it all started for you in your musician career? You are ex-Megadeth member, right?

David Ellefson: I started playing music on keyboards by age eight and then saxophone in the fifth grade in school. That is where I got my early formal music training. I discovered the bass guitar when I was about 11 years old and haven't looked back. Rock n roll bands like KISS, Bachman Turner Overdrive and others were the impetus for me to start bands. I moved to Los Angeles in 1983 at age 18 and that began the career that most of the world knows me as today.

Hanna Tsepesh: what was the best moment for you with Megadeth?

David Ellefson: There were many good ones. Playing Castle Donington in 1988, Rock in Rio in 1991 as well as making records like "Peace Sell." and "Countdown To Extinction" are all good memories.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any musician that you admire the most?

David Ellefson: I have many. I like everyone from KISS to RUSH. IRON MAIDEN to AC/DC. Of course I admired the work of bass players but I liked good songs, great riffs and many other musicians, too. Guys like Angus Young, Neil Peart and singers like Rob Halford were landmark artists who inspired me along the way.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know what age you start to play bass and why you pick this instrument? You play another instrument?

David Ellefson: I loved the sound, look and total vibe of the instrument. I liked what Gene Simmons did with the bass. I liked what BTO bassist CJ Turner did with his parts. In fact, he had a cool Rickenbacker 4001 that I loved. When I saw Geddy Lee playing one of those I immediately thought he was cool and checked out RUSH.
I did learn how to play guitar shortly afterward, around age 13, and have continued that, too. But, I love to record and perform with the bass. To me, it is the heaviest instrument on the planet!

Hanna Tsepesh: at the moment you have 2 bands, right? One called F5 and another HAIL. For people who don't know this bands yet can you talk about them?

David Ellefson: F5 has been a mainstay band for me that formed in 2003. We have two albums out called "A Drug For All Seasons" and "The Reckoning". You can check it online at www.myspace.com/f5thebandaz or www.f5theband.com
HAIL! is a band with me, Tim "Ripper" Owens, Andreas Kisser and Jimmy DeGrasso. It is a total blast and tons of fun. We play some songs from our own catalogs of work as well as fill in some great covers songs from bands that inspired us as teenagers. The crowd loves it and we go to far reaching places on the planet to play, which makes it very special and unique. You can look that band up online at www.myspace.com/hailtheworld or at www.hailtheworld.com

Hanna Tsepesh: What are the future plains for these bands? They will release something in the future?

David Ellefson: F5 will be writing new music in the coming months. HAIL! has a ton of stuff on YouTube and may have a release of some sort of live DVD in the future.

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite album (from one band that you like it) and why?
David Ellefson: I like "Peace Sells.", "Countdown to Extinction" and "Cryptic Writings" as a few of my favorites from that band. I like both the F5 records and the album "Lethal Agenda" from a band I have called TEMPLE OF BRUTALITY.

Hanna Tsepesh: One of your bands is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

David Ellefson: We have been in touch a promoter in Portugal about HAIL! Not sure when we will be there on tour...

Hanna Tsepesh: What is your personal opinion about metal in our days? Did you think is better or poor?

David Ellefson: Music always changes so I try to keep an open mind to all of it, even if I don't like it. We all have our favorites because it is what we know from certain periods of our lives. However, all things must grow and move forward and there are a ton of bands who were inspired by my work over the years that are now out there doing their own thing and creating something new, just the way me and my generation did from what we heard in bands like JUDAS PRIEST and BLACK SABBATH. To me, there is room for all of it.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

David Ellefson: Thank you for hanging with me all these years. I hope to be back in Portugal soon to play live for you all again.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with your 2 bands! We hope to see you very soon in here.

David Ellefson: Great, thank you.

MYSTIC PROPHECY

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Roberto! Thanks so much for accepting this interview! For those who do not know Mystic Of Prophecy could tell us a little how it all started and introduce yourself and the other band members?

Roberto: Hello there! The band was found in 2000 by me and ex-bass player of the band Martin Albrecht. The simple reason for this was because I wanted to create a band that would deliver pure and true metal! Until now Mystic Prophecy has released 6 full length albums (which 2 of them were released via Nuclear Blast and 3 via Massacre Recs) and has participated in Major festivals like Wacken Open Air, MetalCamp, Earthshaker,Bang Your Head etc.Considering the line-up..I'm the lead singer of the band,on the guitar duties we have Markus Pohl and Constantine,on the bass Connie Andreska and behind the drum-kit Stefan Dittrich.

Hanna Tsepesh: What inspired you the most to create the lyrics? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Roberto: I write generally about subjects that concern us every single day like war, starvation, unjustice, the environment and so on..Generally I don't like to write about dragons and unrealistic things..i believe that we definitely have more serious issues to consider and we should be speaking totally clearly about this facts. It's outrage for all of them and not right at all in a moral way for instance that politics- to have their fridges packed with food and to throw it away whenever when the same time babies in other countries are dying because of hunger!
On the fireangel subject, everyone and each of us lives as an angel of fire..He comes to life, destroys whatever is around him and then he dies and becomes dust..Many people speak about the apocalypse..I believe that the apocalypse started the very first day man appeared on the planet..We are born to destroy the environment we live in and that's why i think about that every single one of us is a small apocalyptic fireangel.
When it comes to the songwriting procedure sometimes it differs to the approach.Actually we have used both of the ways that you already mentioned!

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

Roberto: My favourite bands are BLACK SABBATH (only with DIO),BAD COMPANY, MERCYFUL FATE, EXODUS and others..Concerning the vocalists that I admire are GLENN HUGHES,MIKE HOWE / BAD COMPANY,RONNIE JAMES DIO,RAY GILLAN /BADLANDS.These vocalists are very special to me because they are unique and have amazing feeling in their style of singing..! It's important I believe for a vocalist,to listen to him and giving you the goosebump!

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had or have any singing lessons or any other preparation? In this album we can listen that you have a great powerful voice and very versatile singer, I think you make an excellent work in “Fireangel” album.

Roberto: First of all thank you for your kind words! Actually,I never had singing lessons and I don't believe that I will have now that I am 43 years old...hahahaha!!! I think that the vocal lines on the "FIREANGEL" album are the best that I have ever recorded so far!I'm totally happy with the result and my performance!

Hanna Tsepesh: Talking about your new album “Fireangel” is out now! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “Fireangel”? What your fans can expect from this album and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Roberto: First of all both the fans and the metalheads that haven't heard of us yet can expect a true modern metal album with huge guitar walls, catchy hook lines and really high quality songs! I would say that the "FIREANGEL" has the biggest variety from all our previous releases and it's also an album that every metalhead can enjoy from the first up to the last song.It contains a lot of mid-tempo and up-tempo tracks and also the fastest Mystic Prophecy song ever..We kill! You die! I wouldn't say in any way that the "FIREANGEL" is our best album so far because I believe that every record from M.P. has something unique and it's own beauty and I can't really pick an album out..This can only be decided by the fans who buy the album and can compare it with the previous ones..!

Hanna Tsepesh: Everything went well at recording studio? The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Did you think this album is one of the best Mystic Of Prophecy albums?

Roberto: Everything went excellent down in the studio at the recording days and actually the recording procedure was the fastest ever! The guys needed a very few days to record their parts because they were very well prepared and very eager during the sessions!! I don't really miss anything at the moment..I'm really happy with the album and I really enjoy listening to it..I would say that it could be one of the best albums of M.P. but for me all are really special and unique!

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans? I saw some cool reviews at Mystic of Prophecy MySpace…

Roberto: The response that we have received so far from the media and the fans is excellent! The fans love it and and apart from that the album in the first week of its release entered the German Charts at place 77#! In addition, the album in the month of May took the highest places at the soundcheck of big magazines like Rock Hard, Metal Hammer etc. Things couldn't be better than this really!

Hanna Tsepesh: That is really great! what is your favorite music in this album and why? Also, one of your big fan ask me to ask you this: What is your favorite Mystic Of Prophecy album and why (Without this new one)?

Roberto: My favorite songs on the album are Demon's Crown/Father Save Me/To The Devil I Pray/Revolution I Evil/We Kill! You Die! I think I have already answered to the second question above..Every Mystic Prophecy album for me is unique and special..In that point of view I can't say which is the best so far…

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Roberto: The band is planning to tour in October this year to promote the new album as much as possible and to play for all the crazy fans of the band across Europe!! We would really love to get to Portugal if it's possible and if the touring schedule includes it as well! So, hopefully we will be there!!

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for your fans around the world?

Roberto: Hello brothers! Thank you for all of your support all these years and your faith and trust that you show to Mystic's Music!! Without you we would never be in that level that we are now! And last but not least ,please don't burn the cd's because you kill this wonderful music!! Take care and see you soon on tour!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with this new album and good luck with your future concerts !We hope to see you guys very soon in here…

Roberto: Thank you for the lovely interview! Keep supporting metal music and keep representing! See you soon!

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome Roberto! All the best and thank you!

MARENNE

Hanna Tsepesh: Moro Zachary Hietala and Marenne! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know Marenne could tell us a little how it all started and how do you two meet to found this band?

Marenne: Well, there wasn't any other guitarist that I would have even consider, so I asked Zac to join.

Zachary: Marre is always too polite (laugh)! When Marre told me about this idea, it was so interesting I couldn’t say no. And as you know, I haven’t done music with female singer before, so I got to go for it.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are the inspirations to create the lyrics for MARENNE? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Marenne: I have written all lyrics and will do that in the future too. Lyrics comes from my own life and melodies are always created around the stories.

Zachary: Me and Janne got all lyrics and melodies from Marre and they were kinda so sad, it was easy to start to do music around them. We are melancholic Finns...

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands?

Marenne: Amorphis, Eternal tears of Sorrow and of course Tarot, Without Tarot there wouldn't have been any Marenne I guess.

Zachary: For me, all the old school metal bands does it, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, etc.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had or have any singing lessons or any other preparation? You have any singer that you admire the most? You have a fantastic voice, I am really surprised with your talent in this album!

Marenne: Thanks for your kind words! When I was at school we had to take some singing lessons and for me those were the classical ones. My voice changed quite a lot and it took many years to get my original voice back, so no more lessons to me.. And yes, there is two singers that I admire and those are the most talented guys in the world (with their techniques!) Marco Hietala and Tomi Joutsen.

Hanna Tsepesh: Zachary when you start to play guitar before you create Tarot band? Any musician inspired you to start and why you pick guitar for your instrument? I take this opportunity to send you my congratulations for your work in the both bands; you really are an amazing guitar player!

Zachary: Thank you. Our father sung kids bedtime stories with guitar and it was natural that both of us tried to play and sing. Marco was so much better vocalist, so I pick up guitar. We got some local bands before Tarot, but none to mention seriously. Tarot was the first serious group for me and brother and we have gone the long road since.
Now I’m real satisfied how this Marenne project turned out and hopefully larger audience will notice our music and we can tour outside Finland too.

Hanna Tsepesh: One little curiosity Zachary, how are things with Tarot? Did you guys are thinking to make another album? I ask this because Tarot have a lot of fans at Portugal…

Zachary: We have started to write the new Tarot songs and gonna rehearse them at summer 2009. Hopefully we have enough time to do the new album in the near future. Marco is so busy with Nightwish till next Spring, so this takes time. Actually I’ve done couple of riffs for Marenne already and I’m sure that Janne has ideas of the new songs too. If I know correct, Marre got ideas for couple of albums!

Hanna Tsepesh: talking about your new album “The Past Prelude”. Like I said before I am really impressed with MARENNE talent! In the first music (“The Stone”) for example have some Indians elements, right? In my opinion this album is fantastic and very well done and produced! I really don’t have anything bad to say! But, for people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “The Past Prelude” and what is the big different for you between this album and the previous one?

Zachary: This on was the first actually, but differences compared what I have done before is coming from the nature of the album, or atmosphere... Tarot albums are heavy and aggressive, this one is much more sad, story telling, almost like troubadour kinda stuff, with metal of course.
Marenne: The Past Prelude is our debute album and there is many more to come in the future!

Hanna Tsepesh: I have a few questions about the recording studio: the band has some cool guest in backing vocals, can you guys tell to us little bit about that and who they are? The band feels proud with
the final result or you think that miss something? Also, everything went well at recording studio? It was an easy process?
Marenne: Simply to say: it was just perfect in any aspect I can imagine. Making demos, studio work, everything went so well. I was crying while singing and the guys were laughing etc.. The whole world was shown in that little part of our lives. Marco Hietala (Nightwish and Tarot), Tommi “Tuple” Salmela (Tarot), Anssi Stenberg (Mannerheim), Jani Hyvärinen (Defuse), Petri Kaitamäki (Blinded Rain) and Tuomas Koponen (Verjnuarmu) gave their voices for our use. And we're satisfied.

Zachary: As I said before, it was easy to start, but it took almost the whole last summer to complete the album. First me and Janne did instrumental stuff, which we sent to Marre for the approval, then Tom (drums) and Jukka (bass) did their parts in Helsinki. After the that we did some mixing and cutting here in Kuopio, and then we recorded our parts for real. It took time to middle of Summer and then Marre could start her singing sessions here. Then we start to mixings, but couldn’t finnish them, because have to wait Marco’s holidays from Nw and other boys schedule to get them in the studio in the same time, which took the place in Kerava. It really took awhile to complete the whole album. However, it was nice experience, but next time we will do everything in the same studio, if it’s possible?

Hanna Tsepesh: The cover album is very beautiful! Who is the person behind this great work? Did you think this album transmit what “The Past Prelude” are?

Zachary: Artwork idea came from Marre and It’s the work from the artist called Toxic Angel, he’s the master of digi graphics. Actually, he’s done our Suffer and Crows album covers as well.

Marenne: The Past Prelude is just the beginning. Of course we hope that it stays in the history in some way. It's been a huge thing for all of us.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?
Marenne:
Great this far I must say! I'm more than happy, really. I couldn't even dream this, I'm so grateful for all the fans and media for treating us so well.

Hanna Tsepesh: Cool! If one of our readers wants to buy your album safely, what they can do?

Zachary: Order it online, way of today. For example www.myspace.com/marenneband

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Marenne: Well, I laugh out load pretty much I can say..so for me the most important song is Land of Misery. It was the one that made me cry at the studio and guys were supporting me so greatly. They know now my other side too which is quite caring and sensitive. And hey, they can stand it pretty well!

Zachary: I have to say... Under My hand.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something? Did you like to come?

Marenne: That would be more than great and yes, there is plans for the coming fall to make some touring in the Europe, lets see how it goes then!

Zachary: Surely we do gigs everywhere it’s possible, with great desire!

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview and fans out there?

Zachary: Try to check us out, keep the metal flag high!

Marenne: Remember that you are not alone ever, there is always music to share your tears and laughs! New Marenne-website will be launch during the summer at www.marenne.com

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success with “The Past Prelude”! We hope to see Marenne very soon in here…

Marenne: Thanks Hanna and THE GATES OF METAL! And you: READERS, thanks for being there and supporting us. Our music is born to be part of all of us.

VELVETSEAL

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Velvetseal! Welcome back guys! Thanks so much for accepting this second interview, I am very happy to talk with the entire band again! First of all, how are you guys?

David: Thanks for your question, everything looks fine, things became a little bit busy around the band, but that was our goal, so, we shouldn’t be unsatisfied. And we are also glad to back on THE GATES OF METAL! Thanks for the opportunity

Gabee: Hi Hanna, yep that’s right, and we are little inpatient since we are pretty much looking forward to tour now., and all this waiting is killing us and also making us tired.

Hanna Tsepesh: Now Velvetseal have label called Dark Balance. What is the feeling to have this label? You guys are happy with Dark Balance work so far? It was a long process to find a label, right?

Csabee: we are very glad to be part of the Dark Balance roster. Personally I very much preferred this label from the beginning, since we have been able to build up a close relationship with them. I think this is one of the most important things for a band that is standing before its debut release. They need special attention, dedicated time, and management, and if you are just one of the million bands then, well, maybe they can put your name to many more places, but they will never have the dedicated time. With Dark Balance things seem to work well, we are now through the first media campaign and we got a lot of support from them.
Yes indeed it was a long process, if we count from the time when we have started our search we could say almost a year, of Course the first discussions have been earlier. The reason for this is quite simple, we wanted to make sure that we find the most suitable label for our purposes, and we had quite a lot of discussions and negotiations to achieve that. You know, all starts are perhaps a little slow, and I am sure the 2nd release will go much faster, but we wanted to choose carefully. Such a choice effects the future status of the band, so…We chose carefully. We actually were hoping first to have the album released Early February, but we had to postpone it a little to make sure that all magazines start publishing their reviews in time. So this all ended up taking quite a while.

Hanna Tsepesh: let’s talk about your debut album “Lend Me Your Wings”, I have to tell to all of our readers that like gothic metal ... TO BUY THE ALBUM NOW! Is great to listen your hard work all together, this album has all of the things that the gothic fans like: great melodic voice, melodies, great work with bass, guitar and drums. I am very happy with the fact that finally Velvetseal have one label that support you guys for the future. The first time we spoke we talk little bit about the album but now I want that you guys tell to us more about “Lend Me Your Wings” for those who don’t read the first interview. Now with record deal what you guys want to accomplish with this album? What the lyrics talk about? You guys think that the band is more darker than the other gothic bands out there?

Gabee: We really hope that now with a record deal and a label support, the album will be available in as many places possible and people will get to hear the name a little more, since probably they do have a better knowledge and access to media then us. So far everything is going well.

David: It is pretty hard to put VelvetSeal between some style boundaries, it is dark, it is gothic but maybe from another point of view like gothic is defined usually. Maybe some of the fans, or readers will tell, that, this has nothing with gothic, because it is something else. I think it is more darker from the musical view, I would say the riffing is much more brutal than usual gothic bands, but everyone can decide. About lyrics ask someone else.

Csabee: Well Honestly, I am not sure we can even consider ourselves that much Gothic? (well that is if you compare us to bands like Deathstars, Mortiis, or similar). Perhaps yes, if you compare us to the biggest female fronted bands, we could say we are slightly heavier and the lyrics I guess are a bit darker as well. There are a lot of bands out there today who claim to be gothic and this “queue” for me is beginning to become too crowded In our case, the lyrics talk a lot about different problems or aspects of life that anyone can encounter but if someone just listens to the words without looking at the complete picture, it may sound a little dark. For example, “The divine Comedy..?” gives an ironic, grotesque picture of people who follow without understanding or questioning the truth; then “Where Statues Cry” is actually a dialogue between a child and a parent in the moment of death. Freefall is pretty much a spit in the mirror for people who do nothing but pity themselves.

Hanna Tsepesh: If our readers want to buy this fantastic album what can they do?
Balázs: In Portugal? I am not sure our label has an official distributor over there, but surely you can get the album through the big we borders, or straight from the label and if we make it to Portugal we will bring a pile with us. But really, Our label is constantly on the lookout for new distributors worldwide, so it might happen that in a few weeks he will have something over there as well, you’ll never know, but as soon as we get to know it, will let you know straight away!

Hanna Tsepesh: Your Myspace have a new layout, very cool by the away! I liked also the album cover. Who as the person behind this work? You guys are happy with the cover? Did you think the cover transmit the album? Gabee is you in the cover album?
David: The person behind all these work is a very close friend of the band, and she put all her work in the design and appearance of VelvetSeal from the very beginnings. Off course we are absolutely satisfied, and the cover has a very funny story.

Gabee: Yes that’s me on the cover. We initially had a completely different idea, and approach for the album cover, and believe me we have found this photo only later. And it is really funny because this photo was only a photo made during the breaks in the photoshooting session while I was sitting and relaxing, and the photographer only made this as a joke. A Good Joke! Because it turned out to give exactly the feeling of “Lend Me Your Wings”
Hanna Tsepesh: What is your favorite music’s in this album and why?

Balazs: Desperati is definitely my favorite of all, because this song has been able to bring up a completely different feel in me. It is a little different from the other songs in this aspect. And also the last track on the album which is a much faster and airy song but it is terribly rocking at gigs.
David: Freefall, and The Divine Comedy. Because I like them to play!

Gabee: This is a really difficult question for me. What I have learned is that as time passes I always have a different favorite. It also depends on the mood I am in, I guess it strongly depends on it. Currently I think it is Torn Within, because it is really dynamic, and has a very strong meaning. And ragefull lyrics. But of course in the end everyone finds something else in them so.

Csabee: Don’t ask me to choose, I find them all my favorites, for something. Maybe just a single note that fo rme is outstanding or the complete melody line. But ok if I have to say something it is “The Divince Comedy..?” and “The One”.

Hanna Tsepesh: You guys are thinking about a European tour or something? Don’t forget Portugal in your tour (laughs)! What are your future plains for the band?

David: Absolutely, planning is going on all the time, off course we won’t forget about Portugal, if we would be able to organize, we would like to visit and play all the countries here in Europe. But, seriously the answer is yes, there is something in the pipeline, unfortunately only for the end of this year, we had to skip the summer festivals because of the release date of our album, but no problem, we will spend the summer with other important thing which will be very interesting for our fans. Hopefully!

Balazs: Naturally we are thinking to organize a tour, and we do not want o leave out any country since we have received comments and emails from almost every country in Europe, but you know we are aware that VelvetSeal is still a recent band on the scene so it is a little hard to be able to organize a full European tour. But of course we will try to reach most of our fans and hopefully we will be able to visit Protugal as well soon. (Laughs) Maybe even sooner if we get an invitation! But really, it is little hard to dig up good contact so once that is found the band is really open to come.

Hanna Tsepesh: You guys have other bands or some projects in mind?

David: No way! VelvetSeal kills my mind, and it sucks all my energy, it is far enough.

Gabee: No, I dedicate all my time to VelvetSeal.

Balazs: No, I think this is what we all agreed, when we have started the band. Initially it was only meant to be a project and everyone had their own activities. But when we have decided to form VelvetSeal as a band we have all I think agreed that this will be our main goal. I do have some other minor session musician things, but VelvetSeal is the only band at international levels.

Csabee: The others hate me for this, but I can’t help it, when I am writing songs, I do have a lot of them that are disqualified as VelvetSeal tracks, or perhaps I get a good song idea which I do but it is a completely different style maybe too heavy to modern, perhaps death metal and that stuff. Currently what I do is I record them all, elaborate them maybe a little, collect them under different style portfolios, and keep them for the future. I don’t waste too much time on it since we have a lot to do with VelvetSeal but...One of my dreams is anyway to compose film music, and be a producer sooner or later so who knows it can help to have a few albums in different styles ready in the drawer, right?

Hanna Tsepesh: (laugh) yes i understand! Can you tell to us the biggest moment at Velvetseal and the down moment and what was the biggest lesson that you guys learned since the beginning?

Balazs:I Think I can say that the best thing for all of us is when we finally, after all those long discussions and waiting, have seen the album released, and on the shelves of the shops. That is definitely a good memory. Now we are looking forward and hope sales will go well.

Csabee: Do you want to know the worst thing? Well I guess it is that it’s Thursday night and the band is here.. And not touring somewhere still...The biggest lesson? Probably that even if you have done a good album and you get plenty of very good reviews and response from the media, still the start is really, really hard and we just can’t wait to start.

Gabee: also I guess the biggest lesson we had to learn is patience. And there is a good old saying in Hungarian that says “Turelem Rozsat Terem” it would translate to something like “Patience yields it’s Rose” be patient wait and it will have its beauty.

David: Honestly? A lot, but all these lessons are very disappointing. First of all, we, or I realized, that no one cares if you are good on your instrument that is the lowest level, no one will be shocked if you are a good musician. Everything else begins after that, is you able to work in team, and is you able to understand other peoples point. Are you able to sit down and talk about, design, about album cover, about MySpace layout, about promotion, organizing gigs, photo shoots, or video shoots going to the post office and ship Promo packages and so on.... And the time when all this work will show us, that it worth the price, is far from now. So, my problem is, playing my bass is the last thing in this whole story, and it would be pretty much better to stay in the basement, and turning the knobs on my amp left and right all day long to find the best sound for my Bass.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band wants to send any message for your fans out there?

David: Thanks for checking out VelvetSeal!

Balazs: We hope to see you soon.

Csabee: Do you remember what Lestat said (one of my favorite movies: Queen of the damned): “Come out, Come out, wherever you are” .

Gabee: Fans! Buy the album and come to one of our gigs or even better! Buy our album at one of our gigs and I will sign it for you (laughs)!

Hanna Tsepesh: (laughs)! Thanks so much for your answers and time! THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a big success with “Lend Me Your Wings” and we hope to see the band very soon in here…

Everyone: We would like to thank you Hanna again for finding the time to do this interview we really enjoyed it! We really hope we will have the possibility soon to talk again, and until then…
Keep Rocking Dudes and Dudettes!!

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome guys! It was great to interview the band again. Thank you!

DEATHLIKE SILENCE

Hanna Tsepesh: Moro Ms. Maya, Mr.Cerberus and Mr. Catafalque! Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL and thanks for accepting this interview. First question can you tell to us little bit about DEATHLIKE SILENCE history? The band was founded in 2003, right?

Mis. Maya: Moro vaan to you too and you`re welcome! I think Mr. Catafalque can answer this first question better than me.

Mr. Catafalque: Yes, it was 2003 when the band was founded, but actually I wrote the first Deathlike Silence songs in the end of 2002. In the first year the band was more or less looking for the right direction. We had only few songs and there was few member changes and so on. In 2004 wed had the first solid line up and we made our first gig in the autumn of 2004. The first gig is always some kind of milestone in every bands history.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are the inspirations to create the lyrics for DEATHLIKE SILENCE?

Mis. Maya: For me inspiration comes from my own experiences in life generally. It`s unfairness and cruelty but also from love and deep acceptance.

Mr.Cerberus: That’s probably different for each member. For me the lyrics are just things that happen. Sometimes they stem from things that anger me. For this band they don’t really come from happiness, which is probably quite understandable.

Mr. Catafalque: My lyrics come most often from the world of horror, which is also one of my big interests.
Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands at the moment?

Ms. Maya: Alice Cooper is always the number one for me. What comes to the bands which are on the spot right now I really enjoy Volbeat and Ladyhawke.

Mr.Cerberus: Devin Townsend, Genesis and Guthrie Govan plus a whole host of others.

Hanna Tsepesh: I want to ask you if you have or had any singing lessons? I also like to say that you have a great power voice and I am very surprised because I know your band since the beginning and your voice improved a lot!

Ms. Maya: Thank you very much for your kind words! It`s nice to hear that. And I intend to prove even more in the future. Well, as a singer and in life, you are never ready. My background as a singer is classical studies during the years of 1986 to somewhere 1990. It would be nice to have some lessons on now days too, but unfortunately there’s no time for that.

Hanna Tsepesh: let’s talk about your new album “Saturday night Evil”, the riffs are amazing, your voice is very strong in this record and I think DEATHLIKE SILENCE makes an excellent album! For the people who don’t listen your album yet can you talk little bit about it and for you what are the big different between this album and the past one?

Ms. Maya: The new record, Saturday Night Evil, is more like a nice chilly package. All songs are more connected to each other and together they combine a line of chilling stories of life and death.
Mr. Cerberus: The new record is a bit heavier. The production on the new one is also better, seeing as we actually had some kind of a budget this time. The guitar playing is also better on SNE. But Vigor Mortis is also a very good album, something we can be proud of.

Hanna Tsepesh: DEATHLIKE SILENCE has also one cover music call “Moonlight Shadow” (written by Mike Oldfield and performed by the vocalist Maggie Reilly). Why and when the idea come in your mind about to make “Moonlight Shadow” cover?

Ms. Maya: Moonlight Shadow has been on our gig set since the beginning of Deathlike Silence. It’s storyline comes great together with our other songs.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is proud with the final result? How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Ms. Maya: Yes, we are very proud. It’s like having a baby. Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes you have to push really hard to get it out. Now the birth on the beginning was quite hard, but in the end it went easily. And an Evil was born. (Laughs) No pain, no gain. The response of the Saturday Night Evil has been generally really good. We humbly thank you all!

Hanna Tsepesh: What is your favorite music in this album and why?

Ms. Maya: I really prefer Burning Flesh because of the lyrics. They are so strictly straight and they’ll Eat Us because it’s so macabre.

Mr. Cerberus: Burning Flesh, because of the quirky little jazz thing before the solo and because of the lyrics. Till Death Tears Apart is also something I really like, because of the melody in the chorus.

Hanna Tsepesh: In this time since the band started what is the most precious lesson that you learn?

Ms. Maya: With the right persons around, you can really express yourself freely and make music that you love. It’s a gift to have all these lovable people around me.

Hanna Tsepesh: How long exactly you warm up your voice before singing?

Ms. Maya: First I do five minutes concentration in silence, then smoke a cigarette, gurgle with water and hit the stage.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about European tour? Can you tell me some dates/places for the future gigs?

Mr. Catafalque: We would love to do touring in Europe and where ever, but there is this cruel economical side of it that is hard to beat at the moment. We are still quite unknown band outside Finland, so it’s difficult to arrange a tour, because it’s expensive to travel with all the needed stuff and people. But sooner or later, it will come!

Hanna Tsepesh: you want to send any message for your fans our there?

Ms. Maya: Be nice to each other and Rock on! And of course listen to our music!

Mr. Cerberus: Buy our t-shirt!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks so much for your answers and time because we know that now you are busy with “Saturday Night Evil”. THE GATES OF METAL wishes to you and the other guys a big success and we hope to see Deathlike Silence At Portugal very soon…

Ms. Maya: You’re welcome, and thank you! Would be a pleasure to come to Portugal!

QANTICE

Hanna Tsepesh: Salut Tony and Vince! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know Qantice could you tell us a little how it all started?

Tony: Salut Hanna! Well in the early nineties, I started an instrumental metal band called Now-Lëdge with Cyril Verez on bass and co-composition, and we did some wild tunes full of shredding and classical orchestrations. After few years, Cyril stopped the project to make different things, especially jazz. (though, many years later, he had the kindness to play on some Qantice songs as a guest). So, since my determination to fulfill my symphonic metal dreams wasn’t extinct, I started to make some new songs, to develop a science fiction concept, and to gather a new band: in 2002 Qantice was born, featuring the violinist Yosh Otias, and the drummer Ephrem Charmois. And since I was able to play bass and keyboard for the album, all we needed now was a good singer…

Vince: In 2005, I found Tony’s add in the French metal magazine called “Hard Rock”, I’ve called him and jumped on the bandwagon.

Hanna Tsepesh: I make a little research about you 2 (laugh), and I see that you guys have also other bands… For example Tony, you have two bands calls Naheulband and Belyscendre and in the past Tornaod, right? This bands has a different style so I ask you when you start to feel to make this band? I know you like a lot symphonic heavy metal, did you miss that? Or you start to feel little bit bored and you want to start a new thing with new challenges? And also you Vince you have another band calls Lands of past, I already listen some music’s and is little bit different about what you do in Qantice, did you feel the same thing that Tony feels? (Go to another different project and start new things, etc.). Finally, I ask if you can tell to us about your other bands for our readers know little bit about them…

Tony: First, you have to know that all I do or did besides power/symphonic metal has always been secondary for me. And though these parallel bands have been bringing a lot to me, I pretty much joined all of them by accident (laugh). Here’s another story: in the time when Now-Lëdge splitted, I was also part of a metal band called “Mindrage” (heavy thrash) and Tomaz (singer/leader) suddenly wanted to play celtic music and I found the idea interesting so I picked up a banjo and followed him in the Irish and Britain pubs of Paris. That’s how Tornaod started, a very enriching experience that allowed me to play up to 3 or 4 concerts a week for many years, gaining money and musical skills. During all this time, Qantice was still growing in my head. The same situation occurred later with Naheulband and Belyscendre, but less intensely as we only play once a month. Everytime, these concerts are like a breath of fresh air, a party among friends.

Vince: I’ve enjoyed Qantice for the concept; as for Lands of Past, it was a practice run. But my real felling and principal project is Agone Angel www.myspace.com/agoneangel. This band is composed by MAI (Music Academy International – a music school in France) students in which we found a lot of hopes. It’s a strong and spell building music, who, I believe, will bring heavy metal towards others tones.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You guys have any musician that you admire the most?

Vince: First, Sebastian Bach for his charisma and his voice of course. Also HIM for the Gothic atmosphere, In flames for the Nordic sound, Adagio, Linkin Park, Pain, for the fusion and research of new tones, Devin Townsend for the genius and the creativity. And a lot of others bands through different styles and times.

Tony: Here’s some bands that have counted a lot to me: Angra, Symphony X, Iron Maiden, Rhapsody Of Fire, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Stratovarius, Scanner, Rage, Sortilège, Riot… And the musicians I admire the most are those who have what I call the “magical spark” in their compositions: the urge to express something deeply cerebral and emotional through their music, the ability to catch those melodies and progressions that have a taste of eternity and seem to preexist before they are found. Of course this is all a very subjective judgement, but I consider that John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Tchaïkovsky, Schubert, Listz, Chopin, Mozart have this capacity. And among the metal composers I would quote Peter Wagner, Kai Hansen, André Matos, Luca Turilli, Timmo Tolki, Michael Romeo, Uli Jon Roth or even Malsmteen whose first album “Rising Force” has completely changed my life…

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to know if you had or have any singing lessons or any other preparation? You have fantastic voice for this kind of style I hope you never give up on this because if you do is incredible lost! I think you have a great future as a singer…

Vince: First of all, I’ve learned guitar. Next I had a liking for singing and I worked and took lessons with a personal teacher who had knowledge in lyrical singing. Eventually, I was a MAI student. Today I give some singing lessons and I still work on my voice. But you’ve never heard me under my shower: I promise it’s gorgeous!

Hanna Tsepesh: and you Tony, when you start to play Guitar? You also play bass. So, if I ask you what instrument you prefer to play what will be you answer and why?

Tony: I started to play the guitar at the age of eighteen and this is indeed my favorite instrument. Like I suggested earlier, Yngwie is the guy who triggered my decision to become a neoclassical guitarist. Now, I also enjoy playing the bass or other instruments like acoustic guitar, banjo, or mandolin. In fact, I like so much to make orchestrated music that I wished I could play every instrument! But there’s already a lot of work to do on a guitar so I’d better not spread myself too much.

Hanna Tsepesh: About Qantice: What are the inspirations to create the lyrics for Qantice? The band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Tony: The lyrics of each song are painting events that takes place in a sci fi/ fantasy world called… Qantice ! - easy to remember, isn’t it (smile)? Now what comes first between lyrics and music ? I’d say it’s the music. I seek for good melodies first, and after that, I ask to myself: “What am I seeing here ?”. It’s like focusing on a blurry image and slowly discovering what it’s about. After that, all these elements are put together in a story and a first sketch of lyrics is written. Then Vince shows up and we discuss which words can be kept or which ones should be replaced or even suppressed to let him find the best voicing result or simply find a place to breath !

Hanna Tsepesh: Qantice have a new album call “The Cosmocinesy”. In my opinion about this album is: I liked a lot the melodies, they are very beautiful and I think that brings a little bit what you learnt with Tornaod, Naheulband and Belyscendre, right Tony? Also, the voice is great and the lyrics are amazing, I think when we listen with our heart and mind this album we feel in different World (somewhere in another galaxy or something). For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about “The Cosmocinesy” and what the band want to accomplish?

Tony: Indeed, more that once in this album, you can find celtic and accoustic elements that were inspired by what I play in all my other bands. And I think there’s nothing like celtic instruments to portray some wide and lovely green lands, or to bring us into a “Braveheart” state of mind.
As I said before, Qantice is not only the name of the band but also the name of another world, so we’re glad to see that you felt this way about it! To get more into details, it is a kind of flat and infinite land from another universe, a big strange land where you can find oceans and planets hanging in the sky among the clouds, some of them carrying different races and civilizations… And thanks to some crystals called “Ergolys” a technology has been invented that allows anyone to reshape matter and create anything at will. But things aren’t so simple, because there are pirates that steal those crystals, Megantrops who have these powers without the need of any device, and some other people who think it’s all a sin to control matter like this.
“The Cosmocinesy” is only the fisrt part of this epic saga. The word means “Movements of The Worlds”… a huge program starting with the quest of a Megantrop for a stolen planet. Now, to summarize what the band wants to accomplish, I’d say that in the vein of the Never Ending Story’s Fantasia, Qantice is an hymn to the endless wonders of creativity. (sounds pretty much like something Luca Turilli could have said, I know. (laugh) )

Hanna Tsepesh: The cover album is very c
ool! Who was the person behind this work? Did you feel that transmit what “The Cosmocinesy” is?

Vince: It was Neil Maccormack, a very good English 3D artist who did 90% of the work. Then a nice post production has been done by ZeMial, a graphist from Belgium. He added many filters to warm up the scene, some grass in the front, and the cute little lightning strike at the back of the CD.
Tony: And yes it really fits with the concept: Neil did the starship from a bad drawing I had done and all the rest has been conducted via email instructions, during once month. And I’m gonna salute here the extreme patience of these two guys because I can be very picky about details sometimes…

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? This album has some important guests, right? Can you tell to us about it? Everything went well at recording studio? It was an easy process for you guys and the others?

Tony: Well the recordings were all made at my home, in Montreuil (a city next to Paris). And since I really wanted to take my time, I could gather lots of interesting guests, indeed, especially some celtic musicians that were part of my other bands or just friends that came and see me. So the easy part was that we could take our time, but since, I’m not the best sound ingeneer in the world, I can say the general sound could have been slightly better if we had done it in a real studio. Anyway we’ve been lucky to have Kevin Codfert (keyboard/producer from Adagio) make a wonderful job on co-production and mixing... So yes, I’m happy with what we got!
As for the difficulties, well I admit it’s been tough sometimes because the technical conditions were not at their best. And Vince is probably going to tell you what an annoying perfectionist I can be… (laugh)

Vince: Indeed, Tony is an annoying perfectionist and that’s the reason why I think this album is really fulfilled, even if Tony would like to carry out more and more modifications (laugh).

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?

Tony: Some fans had been waiting for this album for so many years and I can say they were happy to hear it at last and a large majority of them have reacted with an incredible enthusiasm… I think they’ve all realized how much passion and work these songs contain and we’ve received some very touching messages from our fans from all over the world.
Regarding the media, we have three categories:
- there are some who really had a big crush on our stuff, and made some incredibly positive reviews. “The Cosomocinesy” has been “album of the week” or “album of the month” in lots of them and I’m so grateful to them! As an example, the Raven’s Eggs And Kegs Radio show from USA has been playing our music in all its shows, for more than one month now!
- then you also have a small amount of reviewers who are not really into that type of music, or they’re just tired of it, but all of them acknowledge our album is at least very well done.
- finally, you have the major medias, like the big magazines, who still haven’t even noticed that we existed. But I won’t blame them because the market is overcrowded with new albums being released everyday, so they can’t hear every production. Also, most of them received our CD just a couple of weeks ago, and some still haven’t… So let’s be patient. And I guess that what will make the difference is time, concerts, and the support of our fans…

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Vince: My favorite song is “Megantrop” for the power of the melody, and “Burial Waves” cause emotion in it is really deep.

Tony: Like I already said somewhere else, I refuse to choose which of my children I prefer… Though I can say that Pirates is probably the richest of all, and Megantrop has the best melody. But I can also say that Ocean Eclipse is the most beautiful, and Burial Wave the most intense and dramatic… And could go on like this with each of the other songs. So it will all depend on my mood: today, I would answer “Head Over Worlds”: the super power metal opening song, full of life and crazy breaks.

Hanna Tsepesh: If our readers want to buy your new album, what they can do to have it in a safe way?

Tony: Oh every way is safe, but it’s like when you buy eggs or goat cheese: it tastes better if you get it directly at the farm where they’re produced (laughs). In other words, go to the online shop of our official site www.qantice.com and remember you can ask for a signed copy. Or you can also get our CD on our label’s site: www.brennus-music.com , or through itune and other digital shop, or ask your local store, wherever you are in the world… There’s an ever growing list of foreign distributors featuring on our website.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plans to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Tony: Well before thinking of a European tour, we’ll think of doing some concerts in France, and before this, we’ll think of making intense rehearsals… And before this (!) we need to find a bassist and a keyboardist… So I’m afraid it’s still a long way until you see us in Portugal, but this leaves enough time to Gates Of Metal to promote Qantice there and convince thousands of people come to our shows. Right ? (laughs) Anyway, we’re very serious when we say we’d love to come and play in Portugal!

Hanna Tsepesh: Right (Laughts)! What is the future plan for Qantice? You guys are thinking a next album or something? I hope you guys don’t give up on this…

Tony: No way I’m giving up on this. Qantice is all my life and during those last ten years, I’ve started to compose a lot of other songs that don’t feature on “The Cosmocinesy”… So the epic story of the Megantrops is far from being over and you can expect to see some future albums rise up in the coming years. All I can’t predict is “when” because I’m a slow and meticulous worker and I prefer to make one good album every five years than something of mediocre quality and inspiration every two years.

Vince: I enjoyed working with Qantice members and why not another journey with them!!!

Hanna Tsepesh: What is your opinion about heavy/power metal in our days? There are always many criticisms in this kind of music’s styles… did you think people don’t understand this kind of music styles? There is a lot of death metal, trash metal, etc., in our days and I don’t see a lot of heavy/power metal bands to. What have this music style that you guys liked so much?

Vince: I believe that today in France there is not real possibility to express this kind of music style and this is so sad! The radios and events stress on rap and r’n’b music save some metalfest who are so rare. Maybe the situation could change thanks to Hellfest. What I like in heavy/power metal is that it’s not compartmentalized and gives the possibility to research new tones and inspiration with an evolving aspect.

Tony: I’d say that most of the criticisms come from people who don’t like it. They don’t like high pitched voices, or happy melodies, or these kinds of things... If what they seek is extreme aggressiveness, or despaired atmospheres, well heavy power is just not for them. I’m not sure it has a lot to do with “understanding”, except maybe with the most technical bands that require brains that can process fast notes and scale changes. Now if we talk about true heavy/power bands, I see lots of them on myspace every day and a lot are quite good. But to me, the thing that makes the difference is what they have to say through their compositions and I sometimes find more passion and magic in a young passionate band than in the last big production of some super band that’s obviously tired of doing this job…So to summarize, what I like in this genre is the spiritual and passionate melodies that make me feel like I’m gracefully flying in some other dimension. And that’s pretty much all I need to feel good.

Hanna Tsepesh: Last question: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Vince: Thank you to listen to this kind of music style cause it’s very important to give more room to metal music in this fucking world. We need readers, listeners and fans to continue doing ours tracks.

Tony: A message? Ok, here we go: don’t believe in what the mainstream media say. Their goal is just to entertain you and to send all forms of critical thinking to sleep. Learn to think for yourselves. And slow down with hyper consumption: not only that’s not where you’ll find happiness, but it’s killing the earth. I know this has nothing to do with Qantice, but that was my message.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with “The Cosmocinesy” album! We hope to see Qantice very soon in here…

Tony: Thank you Hanna. This was our first interview in English, and it was a great experience, especially with an interviewer who’s so supportive of our work. We’ll keep you in touch with you when we have some news, and of course, especially when we come to play in your country!

Vince: Hanna, thank you very much and I’m so glad to be doing this interview with The Gates Of Metal because it’s always important to share our music and our liking for metal with other people around the world .

Hanna Tsepesh: Thank you so much for your words Tony and Vince, it was also great to interview you two! Thank so much and all the best...

MINEA

Hanna Tsepesh: Moro Reijo! Thanks so much for accepting this interview and Welcome to THE GATES OF METAL! For those who do not know Minea could tell us a little how it all started?

Reijo: Hello Hanna! Minea is Finnish hardrock band, which was established year 2004. Actually three of us have played together in other group between 1999-2003. We took a little brake, but after that it was easy to start a new project with old mates. That’s shortly how we started with Minea. Our first album came out 2005 and after that band have had some changes in crew. Nowadays we have five members in our group and we just enjoy a lot to play together.

Hanna Tsepesh: Your lyrics are all in finnish so I would like to ask you: what are the inspirations to create the lyrics for Minea and if the band writes the lyrics first or first the band creates the riffs and the melody to comply with the lyrics?

Reijo: In our last album ’Sota’ we have done melodies and riffs first. Hannu Nissinen (guitar) has done 5 songs to this album and they came quite ready ones to me. We did a little bit arrange work together and after that I wrote down lyrics. I have also done some small changes in melodies after I have done lyrics.
Inspiration to write lyrics arise from everyday life to me. I process my thoughts how I see world around us and it motivates me to write. You can find different moods from experiences and lived life in my text. Some of lyrics are quite strong and we are ready to speak out for things, we just see right. Love and true friendship can be an issue also.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands? You have any singer that you admire the most?

Reijo: There are so many good singers, but I personally admire John Sclitt. When I started to listen hard rock in my early teens, this guy was one, whom I had remembered all these years to nowadays. It’s same thing with bands. Starting from Finland there are so many good bands in the world, that it’s not so easy to name one or two. I think Van Halen, Steve Lukather and especially Giant has influenced mostly, when we have composed songs to this new CD. So, if You have found some marks from 80’s and 90’s melodic hard rock there, we have succeed. ?

Hanna Tsepesh: This bands that you already told us make you decided to play hard rock?
Reijo: Hard rock and metal music bands have always been favorites of mine. I like rich, strong melodies and stadium rock attitude. It has been easy to choose hard rock.
I hope, we have caught those rich melodies and strong rock attitude with modern rock influences in our new album.

Hanna Tsepesh: I would like to say that I liked a lot your voice! You had or have any singing lessons or any other preparation?

Reijo: Thank you Hanna. I’m admired. Actually I haven’t taken any official training or lessons in singing. It doesn’t mean that I haven’t practiced. I have done my home works just like other band members. I have always loved to sing, so it has been natural choice to me to be a singer in a band. I’m very satisfied the sound of my voice in new album, because it’s so near the natural sound of mine.

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome Reijo, it is really my opinion! Minea have a new album out now called “Sota”. I liked so much this album and I am really sad that I can’t understand the lyrics! I really don’t have anything bad to say about this album for me you and your band make an excellent work! For people who don’t listen yet can you talk about this album and what the band wants to accomplish with “Sota”?

Reijo:Desirable things are something we want to speak out purposefully. We are not old ones but we have got some experience of life. I personally have lived quite rough teenage years and be happy that I’m here where I am today. Things could be much worse. Therefore we are ready to stand for good things and values, which are not self-evident in our world today.
At my daily work I meet about 15-20 thousand youngster per year, so I have quite good touch what are aching issues in their lives. In our songs we want to tell people, that everyone’s life is valuable. We also want to live sincerely likewise.

Hanna Tsepesh: One little curiosity: what means Sota?

Reijo: Sota means War. In our album it means The War for hope, peace and justice. Normally we struggle our personal wars in mental level, which are most difficult part to almost everyone. We tell about decisions in our lyrics. Small decisions, which can change our world and give us possibilities to live our live a little bit happier and more equal.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band feels proud with the final result or you think that miss something? Everything went well at recording studio? It was an easy process for you and the band?

Reijo:I think we all are satisfied. The whole process took quite long, because we had some problems with time schedules. We had to move some recording sessions later, which we have reserved beforehand. It took quite a lot work to found new, suitable times, which were ok both recording studio and band members. But when we were at studio everything went exemplary and quickly. We had two young artistic producers in our recording process. It was easy to co-operate with them. They had lots of fresh ideas and they also had good vision how we should arrange songs. So they took part also in pre-production.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?
Reijo: Response from our fans has been excellent. Especially live concerts have been awesome. We have enjoyed a lot to play new songs and I think we have had open atmosphere in our concerts to share all this joy we have got from our new songs.
Despite of it, that Minea use our mother language, we have got great reviews from Europe. Therefore, it has been great to read that new CD has been successful, not only musically, but also the sound/production of the record has been rated very high level. So we are actually little bit proud of it that our independent production has done so well.

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album/EP safely, what they can do?

Reijo: Our distributor here in homeland is Maanalainen Levykauppa, which has a division called Bullroser Records. They have quite good contacts to European wholesalers and we are just waiting to get our album to music shops in different countries.
Before that You can order our CD straight from Maanalainen Levykauppa (www.maanalainenlevykauppa.com) or send an order through our websites (www.minearock.net). We will also update a list of places later, where the album can be bought physically outside of Finland.

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Reijo: To me personally best ones are Sota, Tulessa kasvaneet and Valoon. All of these songs have strong lyrics, rich melodies and they personally rock to me.

Hanna Tsepesh: The band is thinking about a European tour? You guys have plains to include Portugal in your tour or something?

Reijo: We definitely hope that we got some valuable contacts from Europe that enables to negotiate new gigs outside of Finland in future. So, we are looking forward, but still with both legs on the ground.

Hanna Tsepesh: Do you want to send any message for the people who going to read this interview?

Reijo: First of all thank you for your support! We are happy that you have found this interview and also our music. We hope that our new songs will give you good feelings and keep you rocking on. Right now we are living in the middle of the Finnish summer here in Finland, so we wish You light and sun shine to your life.

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks o much for your answers and time. THE GATES OF METAL wishes the entire band a great success with “Sota”! We hope to see Minea very soon in here…

Reijo: Thank You Hanna. It was pleasure to answer. We have already got some victories with ‘Sota’. I also hope we will see in future, so we are just waiting the order to start packing luggage.

Hanna Tsepesh: We really hope the same too! Thank you so much for the words! All the best...
